Sony announces 40GB PS3 and UK price cut

5 October 2007

Sony Computer Entertainment UK has officially unveiled the long-rumoured 40GB PlayStation 3 console, also cutting the price of the 60GB version from GBP 425 – 349.

Effective October 10, the 40GB SKU will retail for approximately GBP 299 and contains a 40GB hard drive and two USB ports; however, the cheaper model eliminates necessary emulation software pertaining to PlayStation 2 titles, along with the multi-memory card slot.

The 60GB version, meanwhile, will contain two first-party titles and a single Sixaxis controller for the reduced price of GBP 349.

Sony commented that it felt such a move was necessary after considering "feedback from thousands of existing PS3 owners as well as research into future potential PS3 owners.”

SCEUK Managing Director Ray Maguire commented: "As we approach our first PlayStation Christmas, it is satisfying to be able to offer UK consumers the choice of two PlayStation 3 packages both now representing remarkable value.”

"We have a brand new 40 GB machine that represents an excellent entry point into the world of high definition games and movies, and we have the fully featured 60GB machine being offered with two next-generation gaming experiences at a highly competitive price."

"The introduction of the new PS3 has been the result of extensive research into the entertainment needs and preferences of the next-generation PS3 owners”, added David Reeves, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Europe.
