High Street retail will still play an integral role in the success of the PlayStation 3’s successor, Sony Computer Entertainment UK big cheese Fergal Gara has said.
Speaking to MCV, Gara made it clear that Sony’s recent $380 million acquisition of Cloud gaming firm Gaikai does not mean that the hardware giant is ready to embrace a digital-only future for PlayStation 4.
This is despite the fact the High Street has suffered turbulent times in the past few years, with U.K. specialists dropping by 300 in the past 12 months alone.
"Coming down off that 2008 peak has been a steep ride for many and has involved fallout on many levels, not least of all retail," said Gara.
"We'd love to see as many of those retailers as possible maintain their interest in servicing the space because clearly down the road many of us are going to be doing our best to give another injection into the market whenever the next cycle starts."
PS4 is pegged for an E3 2013 reveal, and while a release date is still up in the air, smart money puts it out in holiday 2013 or possibly early 2014.
