Bayonetta developer: PS3 version was 'our biggest failure'

In an interview with EDGE Online, Platinum Games described the PlayStation 3 version of 2010 sexy action-thriller Bayonetta as "our biggest failure."

Platinum Games director Atsushi Inaba explained that development of the PS3 port was handled by an internal team at SEGA, and the resulting product - a version of the game plagued by long load times and framerate drops - was consequently crippled. "The biggest failure for Platinum so far, the one that really sticks in my mind, is that port," Inaba said. "At the time we didn't really know how to develop on PS3 all that well, and whether we could have done it . . . we made the decision we couldn't."

By handing off development of the PS3 port to SEGA, Platinum essentially put the nail in the coffin of a game that, while great, could have been so much better. Still, it's refreshing to hear a developer speak so candidly about the state of a game and his personal feelings on how the problems came about. "One thing I will say is that it wasn’t a failure for nothing," Inaba continued. "We learned that we needed to take responsibility for everything. So on Vanquish we developed both versions in-house."

Unfortunately, Inaba's comments do little to comfort Bayonetta fans who are anguished over Bayonetta 2's Wii U exclusivity.
