Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed developer Sumo Digital has backed a fan-driven campaign for deciding on what characters will be released via post-launch content.
Writing on the SEGA forum, Sumo Digital’s Steve Lycett said the developer is happy to support the campaign and whatever characters players decide on – provided that is they meet the necessary criteria.
"I’ll set you a challenge," said Lycett. "Without any policing from the SUMO or SEGA crew, if you can all agree on three characters by the first of December and prove there is sufficient interest of at least 1000 unique people per character, I will present the result to SEGA.
"I can’t promise anything will happen as a result, but since you’re starting it, let’s see if you can organise yourselves in the next few weeks to pull that off."
Fans have already set up a thread listing 26 iconic SEGA characters, each of which links to a separate petition. Currently three characters have notched up 1,000 signatures: Segata Sanshiro (Sega Saturn mascot) Hatsune Miku (Vocaloid) and Ryo Hazuki (Shenmue).
In addition to the above, Vectorman, Ristar and Bayonetta are all approaching the 1,000 barrier. However, Sumo Digital was quite to note that simply meeting the threshold may not be enough; some characters may not be included due to third-party licensing issues, for example.
