Nicolas Cantin, the project director behind the upcoming Thief reboot, has denied reports that the game’s protagonist Garrett will boast a less gothic aesthetic in favour of more mainstream appeal.
Garrett’s appearance has been met with a somewhat mixed reaction from fans, though it appears Cantin’s previous comments on the anti-hero were misinterpreted.
“It’s not correct to say that we’re trying to make Thief ‘mainstream,’ or that we’re trying to make Garrett ‘less gothic’…This isn’t the case,” he told the Eidos Montreal community.
“I was referring specifically to a previous Garrett design we tried out internally and not Garrett from the previous games. Our early design went a LOT more gothic – with black nails etc – but we thought that this wasn’t true to the legacy of Garrett so we pulled it back a bit.
“Returning to something more true to the original Garrett is what I meant when I said we made him more ‘mainstream’, this wasn’t a comment about the direction of the game. I can assure you we’re huge fans of the original games and we’ve done our homework to create a game that maintains the essence of the original.”
Originally announced as Thief 4 in 2009, the reboot is due out on PlayStation 4, PC and ‘other next-gen consoles’ in 2014. Thief takes place in a Victorian-steampunk world, specifically a location known as ‘The City,’ which is ruled by a tyrant known as The Baron. Stealth is once again paramount to success, as Garrett attempts to make his wallet fatter by stealing from the rich folk.
