Sony is continuing to make development for PlayStation products easier by partnering with Unity Technologies to enable developers to use the Unity PlayStation development tool. The announcement has wide-ranging implications, including the ability for developers to more easily port games between the various PlayStation platforms, in addition to easily moving games from mobile devices like iPhones and Android smartphones to PlayStation Mobile.
A partnership between Sony Computer Entertainment and Unity Technologies, provider of the Unity multi-platform engine and development tools, will allow SCE to offer Unity optimized development for PlayStation 4, PS3, PS Vita, and PlayStation Mobile. More than 1.5 million developers around the world have adopted Unity for its power and elegance, according to a statement released today by SCE. The PlayStation platform development tools will roll out this fall.
Unity's integrated development environment will allow developers--those with license agreements from SCE for PlayStation SDKs--to build and deploy software for PS4, PS3, and PS Vita without spending many resources on complex programming process. This essentially allows developers to easily port their games to PS4, PS3, PS Vita, and PS Mobile without the need to rewrite code from scratch. Unity developers can now bring their IPs to dedicated console systems like PS Vita, which allows for unique features like rear touchpad, dual analog sticks, and front-and-rear cameras.
Developers can create games for PS Mobile more efficiently without the need for an additional PlayStation Mobile SDK. Both Unity for PlayStation and PSM SDK use the .NET framework allowing for easy translation between two tools.
But it doesn't stop there. Unity developers can easily port their games created for iPhone, iPad, and Android smartphones and tables to launch on PS Mobile.
Developers will also be able to create games for future cloud services delivered by SCE by utilizing Unity for PlayStation. Games developed by Unity can take advantage of the PS Store and SCE will offer developers the chance to integrate PSN features like Trophy support into their games.
