BioShock Infinite's first review is in: 'a brilliant shooter that nudges the entire genre forward'

22 March 2013

While almost every press outlet in the game industry--including PSU--will be publishing its review of BioShock Infinite early next week, IGN has beat the herd to the trough with an exclusive review of Irrational Games' highly anticipated follow-up to the legendary BioShock.

In his review (published earlier this evening), IGN Executive Editor of Previews Ryan McCaffrey gave BioShock Infinite a score of 9.4 out of 10. Citing a "rich, satisfying story," "luscious art direction," and "myriad combat options" as high points, McCaffrey concluded by calling BioShock Infinite "a brilliant shooter that nudges the entire genre forward with innovations in both storytelling and gameplay."

On the negative side, McCaffrey noted that the game drags a bit during its middle hours, with a slow drip-feed of plot events that make for notably slower pacing. McCaffrey also commented on Infinite's graphical fidelity: the art direction is stunning, but textures and NPC models (with the exception of Elizabeth, the player's stead) leave quite a bit to be desired. Still, these criticism's don't detract from McCaffrey's core message: BioShock and BioShock Infinite are equals, and he is unable to answer which is the better game.

Like much of the industry, PSU.com will launch its review of BioShock Infinite next week. While you wait, check out our official BioShock Infinite page, featuring trailers, screenshots, and news from this spring's hottest title. The game launches March 26, and the PS3 version includes a free copy of the original BioShock.
