'New version' of Doom 4 in works, Rage 2 scrapped

3 April 2013

Doom 4 has undergone a significant overhaul and is now in the works for next-generation consoles, Bethesda has said.

According to the publisher’s marketing chief Pete Hines, an earlier version of the hotly-anticipated horror-shooter wasn’t up to scratch, and so work kick started on a ‘new’ version of the game.

"An earlier version of Doom 4 did not exhibit the quality and excitement that id and Bethesda intend to deliver and that Doom fans worldwide expect," commented Hines (via Eurogamer).

"As a result, id refocused its efforts on a new version of Doom 4 that promises to meet the very high expectations everyone has for this game and this franchise. When we're ready to talk about the Doom 4 id is making, we will let folks know."

However, Kotaku’s sources claim that a firm release date still remains elusive, and that development is ‘not going well.’

Elsewhere, Bethesda parent company ZeniMax has shelved a planned sequel to Rage after the original game failed to meet its sales target. Furthermore, Rage’s DLC plans were “downsized" as a result.

All staff at idSoftware are now working on Doom 4.

We’ll have more as it breaks.
