Assassin's Creed dev says the brand is still relevant

The developer behind the forthcoming Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag has said it is confident the team has done enough to keep the multi-million selling stealth-action franchise fresh.

Speaking with OXM, Jean Guesdon, Black Flag’s creative director, feels the series still has a plenty of room to grow, and justified its annualized release schedule.

“I think we have proven that this franchise is relevant, and that it has a long way to go. Our job as developers of this new opus is to surprise players and bringing fresh, different ideas, while at the same time ensuring that what makes AC such a stand-out franchise remains intact.

“With the scale and scope of the world we are building, the completely new setting, the new gameplay mechanics, and our new characters (both our hero and his supporting cast), we are definitely on track to get the job done and avoid fatigue altogether.”

On the subject of competition from fellow sandbox juggernauts Grand Theft Auto V and Watch Dogs, he replied:

"We are actually really excited to play those games – both of their universes offer something fresh and different! But when it comes to what we’re doing, we believe our promise and setting are very different from both of those games.”

The original Assassin’s Creed was released in 2007, with a sequel arriving two years later. Since 2010 however, we’ve seen a new game every year, with the critically-acclaimed 'Ezio trilogy' wrapping up with 2011’s Assassin’s Creed: Revelations.

Assassin’s Creed III introduced a brand new protagonist in Connor Kenway, as well as a new setting with the U.S. War of Independence. Black Flag takes place over half a decade prior to ACIII, starring Kenway’s grandfather, Edward.

Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag is due out on October 29 in the U.S. and November 1 in the U.K.
