Kojima explains why MGS: Legacy Edition is only functional on PS3

2 May 2013

Hideo Kojima revealed on his blog HideoBlog why the upcoming collection Metal Gear Solid: Legacy Edition will only release on PlayStation 3.

Many reasons exist already as to why the entire collection cannot launch on the Xbox 360, such as the pinnacle of the series Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, after all this time, remaining a PS3-exclusive title. This would mean that, on top of the other small titles included in this edition, one of the most taxing games on the PS3 would have to be entirely ported onto the Xbox 360. In contrast, the only game in this edition that's not available everywhere is Metal Gear Solid: Integral, which is the expanded version of the original Metal Gear Solid title that includes VR Missions and Replay Mode.

Kojima posted in his official blog the other glaring reason why the Legacy Edition would not work on Xbox 360: it would be seven total discs to hold all eight games and two digital graphic novels in the collection, whereas the PS3 version uses two filled Blu-Ray discs to house all of that MGS content.

The complete list of content coming in MGS: Legacy Edition is:

-Metal Gear

-Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake

-Metal Gear Solid

-Metal Gear Solid: Integral

-Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty

-Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater

-Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots

-Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker

-Metal Gear Solid: Bande Dessinée (digital graphic novel)

-Metal Gear Solid: Bande Dessinée 2 (digital graphic novel)

Even in a collection, this will be the first time that a PS3 owner will have to swap discs to access all that this edition has to offer, while Xbox 360 owners have experienced disc swaps already in many games. Clearly, the advantage that BD discs have is significant, and we as PlayStation gamers can only appreciate at this point what we fortunately can take for granted.

The Metal Gear Solid: Legacy Edition is set to release June 11.
