Hot on the heels of a freshly-released firmware update for the PlayStation 4, Sony has released the newest firmware for the seven-year-old PlayStation 3.
Update 4.55 weighs in at 195 megabytes, and the only listed changes to be found are the traditional stability improvements, according to Sony Computer Entertainment Japan. However, PS3news contacted Sony Support and was informed that firmware 4.55 added an update for the Blu-Ray Player and a DVD check. Assumably, enhancements like that are intended to ensure the integrity of content and media like Blu-Ray and DVD movies, but until we know more on that front, stay tuned to PSU for more details.
Firmware 4.55 is in fact mandatory, so all PS3 users who wish to play online will have to download it before getting back into their respective games.
