PlayStation Vita owners are utilizing the handheld as a companion device to PlayStation 4 more than ever before, says Shuhei Yoshida, President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS).
Speaking during an interview with Game Informer, Yoshida-san said that the move comes as part of Sony’s attempts to build a PlayStation ecosystem, with PS4 acting as the central 'hub' as it were.
However, that doesn’t mean PS Vita can’t stand on its own two feet, either.
“It’s still an independent platform you can play on. There are games for Vita, especially in Japan,” said Yoshida-san. “However, more and more people use it as a companion device for PS4 and we are very happy that people are using it as such. We are bringing PlayStation Now to PS Vita. We are making it more of a total ecosystem, with PS4 as the central device.”
One thing that owners are keen to know however, is if Sony will release new entries in its tentpole franchises for PS Vita, such as Uncharted, inFAMOUS, etc.
Unfortunately, Yoshida-san wasn’t able to divulge any new information on this front, but instead pointed to games from its back catalogue already available for the handheld. So, that’s Ratchet & Clank, God of War, and Sly Cooper.
How do you feel about PS Vita’s current position on the market? Would you like to see more exclusive, AAA content? Or are you happy with Sony positioning it as a companion device and indie-heavy platform?
