PS4 has sold 'well over' 25 million units worldwide

Sony has claimed that global sales of the PS4 have reached well beyond the 25 million mark.

on 29 October 2015

Michael Denny, Vice President of Sony Computer Entertainment Worldwide Studios (SCE WWS), has reveald that global sales of PlayStation 4 now stand at 'well over 25 million.'

"I don't think there's a better time to buy into PlayStation - PS4 particularly," said Denny, during a chat with GI.biz at Paris Games Week. "Our installed base now is well over 25 million. That gives us a massive community of gamers, supported by a lot of new community features. We've got great games out there, more coming through. We're looking forward to 2016, it's an exciting time."

Denny didn't divulge an exact sales figure for PS4, although back in July Sony confirmed that its flagship games system had shipped---that's shipped to retailers, not sold to consumers---25.3 million units worldwide. The console launched in November 2013 alongside the Xbox One, although has managed to cement a substantial lead over its rival ever since---something which Microsoft has even itself admitted. Sony outsold the Xbox One in the U.S. last month, in a period which saw record sales on the PlayStation Store.

Over in the U.K., sales of the console have been tracking well ahead of the record-breaking PS2, which remains the biggest-selling games system of all time. Sony recently announced a price cut for the PS4 in the U.S. and Europe, so there's no doubt sales are going to see a significant boost as a result of the cuts. Of course, both Sony and Microsoft will be battling it out for hardware supremacy over the next few months as we approach the lucrative Thanksgiving weekend and the Christmas holidays.
