Capcom has filed to register the trademark titled 'Onimusha,' fuelling hope that it is about to bring back the classic PlayStation 2-era demonic action-adventure franchise.
Spotted by NeoGAF, it's worth noting that the trademark isn't a renewal, but a brand new filing for the brand. Quite what this could mean is anyone's guess, and Capcom is keeping tight-lipped on anything regarding the future of the Onimusha series.
Previously, Yoshinori Ono, who heads up the Street Fighter series, expressed interest in bringing back the series, and there was chatter that Ninja Theory were working on a reboot. However, the company later shot down the reports and we've heard nothing on a new Onimusha game in around three years.
Onimusha: Warlords launched on the PS2 back in 2001, although was originally developed for the PSOne before being scrapped. The game was followed by a sequel, 2002's Onimusha 2: Samurai's Destiny, and while it proved a commercial success like its predecessor, Capcom noted the series' popularity had dwindled somewhat in European territories.
Following a number of spinoff titles over the next couple of years, including Onimusha: Blade Warriors, the franchise received its third full-fledged entry with Onimusha 3: Demon Siege, which stars French actor Jean Reno and alternates between modern-day Paris and feudal Japan. 2007 saw the release of the (to date) final entry in the series, Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams, which was designed to appeal more to skilled gamers.
Onimusha remains Capcom's sixth best-selling franchise to date behind the likes of Resident Evil and Street Fighting, selling a reported 7.9 million copies globally since 2001.
