DFC Intelligence has predicted that PlayStation 4 will go on to sell 100 million units worldwide, and reckons Sony’s console will “command a dominant position for the next five years.”
In addition, the company touched on the subject of virtual reality gaming, which it feels won’t have a significant impact on the video game console market. It does, however, feel that PlayStation VR may help to expand the PS4’s audience a little.
“Overall VR is not expected to have a big impact on the console market,” the firm said. “Sony has the biggest VR play with the PlayStation VR but that is only one of several reasons why the PlayStation 4 is expected to be the leading game system over the next few years. VR could actually help the PS4 expand its audience over the next few years but it is currently not crucial to the overall forecasts as DFC is taking a conservative attitude towards the market.”
Elsewhere, the firm forecast a decline in the number of physical game sales, with half of PS4 and Xbox One software coming from digital purchases by 2019.
Sony announced earlier this year that global PS4 sales had reached 35.9 million since the console’s launch in November 2013. The system is comfortably outselling its lead rival, the Xbox One, which Microsoft itself has even acknowledged.
PS4 has a number of high-profile games coming out this year, including Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, No Man’s Sky, Ratchet & Clank, The Last Guardian and more.
