Grand Theft Auto V has generated a staggering $3 billion in sales worldwide, according to court documents from the ongoing Leslie Benzies case.
For those out of the loop, Benzies, the former head honcho of Rockstar North, is suing the GTA developer for $150 million alleging “numerous deceptions” from Take-Two, Rockstar and Dan and Sam Houser.
Rockstar’s latest crime epic takes place in San Andreas, a fictional representation of Southern California, U.S., and sees gamers taking on the role of three characters: Michael, Trevor, and Franklin. Gamers must switch between the three protagonists in order to accomplish missions, such as the action-packed heists, as well as undertaking the dozens of side quests on offer in the game’s richly-detailed open-world setting.
GTA V was originally released on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox One in September 2013. The game was an immediate success, generating over $800 million in day-one sales and becoming the fastest selling video game of all time in the process. By early October, the game had sold 2.6 million copies in the U.K. alone.
Rockstar eventually brought the game to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One the following November, where it topped the U.K. charts upon release and by February 2015 had sold-in 10 million copies globally. That same month, it officially supplanted Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 as the U.K.'s best-selling game of all time.
