Sony is planning on releasing the PlayStation 4 Neo by the end of 2016, according to sources close to Eurogamer.

If that is the case, it'll be interesting to see how developers utilize its resources, and whether 4K really is the focus. And we can be equally as sure that Microsoft will be watching just as intently as it gears up for its own next-gen roll-out," the report reads.

Sony opted not to showcase the upgraded hardware at E3 last week, although Microsoft was quick to flex its technical muscle with both the Xbox One S and Project Scorpio being unveiled during its press event.

PS4 Neo to offer increased visual fidelity and improved PS VR experience

While Neo was a no-show in Los Angeles, Andrew House, President and Group CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment (SIE), revealed during an interview prior to E3 that the console is officially happening following months of rumors.

The executive revealed that the upgraded PS4 will offer greater visual fidelity, although emphatically stated that it is not intended to be a replacement for the standard console. It's also been suggested the Neo will improve PlayStation VR compatibility.

Reports of the PS4 Neo, also known as PS4.5/PS4K, cropped up earlier this year, when it was suggested the device will be unveiled prior to the release of PlayStation VR in October and launch in holiday 2016.

However, further reports on the PS4 Neo indicated it wouldn’t see the light of day until March 2017, and that we’d get our first look at the hardware at the Tokyo Game Show

Sony's Shuhei Yoshida revealed last week that the PS4 Neo was not running any of the format holder's demos.
