Naughty Dog has released some new artwork for its upcoming PlayStation 4-exclusive horror sequel, The Last of Us Part 2.
This latest batch of art focuses on protagonist Ellie, who takes over the role of playable character from Joel in the first game. Here, we get to see a full character sketch of the potty-mouthed heroine, as well as a close-up of her intricate tattoo.

The Last of Us Part 2 was announced after months of rumors during Sony’s PlayStation Experience 2016 showcase, where the project was confirmed to be in the early stages of development. Sony’s Shawn Layden introduced the trailer by stating it was originally intended to be shown at E3 2017, but Naughty Dog was adamant about unveiling it at PSX this year.

While not much about the game’s plot has been confirmed at this stage, the California-based studio has said that the hotly anticipated sequel will be focused on hate, much how the game’s predecessor was formed around the growing friendship between Joel and Ellie. Indeed, Ellie appears to be out for revenge against an unknown group, telling Joel that she’s going to ‘kill every last one of them.’
Of course, this hasn’t stopped fans from coming up with their own theories based on the brief teaser. The popular belief among gamers is that Joel is in fact dead during The Last of Us Part 2, and that Ellie is merely hallucinating her father figure as a coping mechanism. They postulate that the group of people Ellie is hell-bent on hunting down are the Fireflies, who are believed to have murdered Joel at some point down the line.
The Last of Us Part 2 release date has yet to be confirmed by Naughty Dog, although given how early it is in development, we probably won’t see it until around 2019. Stay tuned for more details as they break.
