Resident Evil 7: How Capcom shaped survival horror thanks to fan feedback

Capcom reveals how fan feedback of the polarizing Resident Evil 6 ultimately lead to such a drastic change for the next chapter in its long-running survival horror series.

Resident Evil 6 will surely go down in history as the most polarizing main installment in the franchise to date, but Capcom has revealed that it’s that very fact that lead the Japanese giant to reinvent its venerable zombie-blasting series with the upcoming Resident Evil 7: biohazard.

Speaking to GameSpot in an extensive feature on the Resident Evil series, Jun Takeuchi, who previously headed up Resident Evil 5 and has been involved with the series since its inception in 1996, said that fan feedback from Resi 6 made it clear that it was time for a change.

"After our sixth Resident Evil, we got a lot of feedback from fans. I think a lot of [people] loved the game. Of course at the same time, we know there's feedback that people thought we're going too far down the road of action horror rather than survival horror.

"That was great timing because, internally, we also felt, this is the time for us to just take a step back and re-evaluate what survival horror means to us and what Resident Evil means to us."

For Resident Evil 7, the team looked to Resident Evil 4 for influence, in the sense it eschewed numerous preconceptions about the franchise to deliver a genre-defining experience that completely reinvigorated the franchise at the same time. Indeed, this was the goal for the latest series installment.

Takeuchi-san added explained that, “going back to [its] roots wasn't synonymous with just turning back the clock on gameplay systems or choices of camera systems."

"The most natural evolution in my mind was how do I get [players] to feel this direct sense of fear and atmosphere of the fact that this character is very much in danger?" he continued. "For me, first-person perspective was a very natural fit for the future of survival horror while remaining true to the series roots."
