Sony could be testing the waters for a permanent PS4 price drop in the not-too-distant future, as a number of major retailers have slashed the cost of various bundles for the console.
Rumours kicked off about a new PS4 price drop following an advertisement for Target, which highlights a PS4 Slim bundle featuring Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End for just $269.99. This bundle is supposedly due to run from August 13 - 16, although if you head over to their website, it’s now available.
Interestingly, the ad displays the “new lower price” tag that implies this may be a permanent price drop for Sony’s flagship home console. Usually, companies advertise these sort of deals as a sale if they’re only for a limited time. Sony is keeping mum on the topic for now, however.
Target isn’t the only retailer to put a price cut in place, either. Walmart, Target, and Amazon have all reduce the PS4 to the $260-$270 mark, hinting that something major could be announced soon enough by Sony. Regardless, it’s a great time to take advantage of the reduced price if you’re in the market for a new PS4.
A price drop would make sense for the PS4 at this point, seeing as how Microsoft will be launching its high-end console, the Xbox One X, later this year. However, the new system is priced significantly higher than any of Sony’s PS4 configurations, a factor that, as far as we’re aware, means Sony has no plans for any cuts.
In fact, analyst Michael Pachter doesn’t expect Microsoft’s new console to beat the PS4 due to the current price advantage it has over the new system.
Elsewhere, rumors persist regarding a potential PS5 release after Sony admitted a new console will launch at some point. Pachter believes we’ll see new home console from the Japanese hardware giant at some point in 2019.
