SEGA acquires Winter Olympics 2010 license

on 9 February 2009

The International Olympic Committee has today revealed that SEGA has gained the exclusive rights to publish videogames based on the 2010 Olympic Winter Games in Vancouver, Canada.

It will almost certainly mean a follow up to the hugely successful Mario & Sonic At The Olympic Games on Wii and DS, but it should also mean that there will be a Xbox 360 and PS3 title featuring all of the current disciplines, including snowboarding, bobsledding, skating and skiing.

Last year, SEGA became the official licensee for the Beijing Summer Olympics and released Beijing 2008, which had mixed reviews. We're hoping for much better game for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games, hopefully including a solid online multiplayer component.

"The Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games offers gamers a collection of exciting sports to master, as well as a stunning location for players to take advantage of," says Okitane Usui, chief operating officer of SEGA. "We aim to bring fans around the world an exhilarating experience whenever they play any Olympic title."

We'd guess that any 2010 Olympic video games will launch alongside the real 2010 Olympic Winter Games in February 2010.
