We know that we shouldn't always trust what we read on forums, but hey, we all like a good rumor. Over at GameTrailers, a poster who supposedly works in Sony's Research & Development department claims that the following is a list of the new features we can expect from the next PlayStation 3 firmware update, 2.7.
Included in the list of enhancements is the option to send voice messages to users on your friends list, as well as being able to send messages while in-game.
Check it out:
Friends List:
- Voice Messaging is now available as an alternative to text after selecting a user on the friends list. Voice message recordings are capped at 30 seconds.
- Home Integration: Saved PlayStation Home avatar photos can be selected as photo ID for Gamer Card/Friends List.
- Trophy number and Gamer Level are listed under Friend names for quick reference.
Gamer Card & Trophies:
- Gamer Card layout has been changed to more closely resemble the PlayStation Store aesthetic.
- Past Trophy information can be viewed in detail by selecting "Recent Trophy History" option.
- Newly acquired trophies auto-sync in the background
- Server infrastructure for Trophies has been optimized. Resulting in faster retrieval time for Gamer Card and Trophy information.
In-Game XMB:
- Loading time for In-Game XMB has been drastically reduced, resulting in a more seamless in-game experience.
- "Theme settings" options while in-game is now available, allowing custom themes to be applied to the In-Game XMB.
- Internet Browser can now be accessed while in-game.
- Voice messaging and voice chat options can be used while in-game.
- Options that cannot be used in the XMB during game sessions are grayed out (but still selectable) to eliminate user accessibility confusion.
Too good to be true? We won't find out for sure until Sony gives us the official verdict.

Sounds good, but it sounds similar to what we heard or 2.0, and 2.1, and 2.2, and 2.3......
Still, it would explain why we haven't seen a new fw in ages.
Well, I'm hopeful, but not getting my hopes up.

Rofl @ stuntpulla...
I work for Sony, and it has been confirmed that the new update will allow the PS3 to drive your car...
Oh, and tell your wives to save that nipple for you, because the new update will also grant PS3's the ability to breastfeed newborns...
...
This new update for the PS3 will turn user's into chick magnets; females will be smearing their greasy fish cu*ts in your face in no time!...
On-topic, tho, I'd love to be able to use photos from my own collection as my PhotoID; don't know if that's implemented already...but I could care less about a Home Avatar photo; heck, I ain't even know you could take photos in Home...

I say it's too good to be true. Besides the in game XMB, I've been let down pretty much every Firmware, so why should this be different :/ Of course if it was true, that would just be sweet :)

@19 In-game music is allowed but it is up to developers to enable it. Microsoft holds a patent on in-game music and Sony found the way around it was to have the deveolpers put it in their games.
www.ripten.com/2008/03/31/microsoft-owns-patent-for-in-game-custom-soundtracks/
and the patent
"You can browse through your lists of video, music, and photos stored on your PS3 while playing a game, but you can't view them. Some games, however, will support custom soundtracks. You'll turn down the in-game sound volume, open the XMB, and play whatever track you like. Sony said that it will not require developers to add support for custom soundtracks, and did not announce any game that would definitely feature them. (Sony representatives demonstrated the feature running with a specially-programmed version of PixelJunk Monsters.)" blog.wired.com/games/2008/06/playstation-3s.html

if this is true then this will be the best update yet, and the most important one in terms of catching up to Xbox Live. About time Sony!

The poster doesn't claim to work for Sony - he claims he has a friend who works for Sony.
And I call BS. "Gamercard" indeed.
Now everyone is going to get their hopes up, and if it's not true, they'll blame Sony for not delivering.

The whole using the browser while playing is gonna be great to look up last minute hints and cheats, but what sony really needs to do, is to add music playback to every game released on the ps3. Like playing the music on our hard-drives instead of the gmae's in-game music...
That Would be really great...

Well posters 19 and 21, you have mentioned the ONLY thing I give a purple turd about, in game user music. I hope that this happens soon, because I am getting truely fed up with the garbage music that most games are sporting now. No more rap or hip-hop when I'm playing my NFS Undercover. Another thing, when it comes to "Gamercards" well you can just sucka mah junk. I have been going insane looking for one, and they HAVE NOT come out in Canada, I have checked every Best Buy, The Source, Futureshop and EB Games in the area if there are ANY released in Canada, and there arent... Sony, I truely love you, owned a prototype PS, but you are killing me here. I'm going out and getting an XBox360 next month, I have had it with the VERY poor online multiplayer options, I'm sick of the online options PERIOD. So, in other words, I'm fed up, F**k You Sony, here is to loosing a lifetime customer and avid fanboy. I might be swayed slightly if this is true, but it isn't, so I say it again, F**K YOU SONY!!!

Oh, and what I meant by "Gamercards" is not those stupid little stats things that take forever to load, in-game and out, but I meant the cards that you can use online to buy things. Should I REALLY have to get a credit card to do this? I mean, seriously, even most websites have a call-in feature to pay. All-in-all Sony has dissapointed me with the online content. I will admit that the system itself is amazing and replaces most of my home entertainment system, but I'm starting to wonder if it was worth the $700 I payed for it, even if it is the 80GB Special Edition. The XBox360 is getting to the point where it is making up seriously for not having the Blu-Ray and such by having Netflix and MUCH better online options. One more tiny gripe I have though, why make the HDD so SMALL?! I use my PS3 for one of the things it was made for, movies on DivX format. Eeven after compressing the living daylights out of them, they still took up all but 8GB on my HDD. I was thinking of getting the 1TB external HDD for the system so I can store my movies, but if Sony is going to keep stiffing us consumers I'm not so sure I'm going to bother...
