Alex Evans: Next LBP project is "really f***ing cool"

Co-founder of Media Molecule, Alex Evans, recently discussed the new direction that the developer plans on taking its LittleBigPlanet franchise with Gamasutra. Needless to say, the development team and upper management are more than a little excited about their next plans for the lovable SackBoy, with Evans dubbing it "really f***ing cool."

"We're gonna just take a character, we're just gonna try this direction. It's a quite interesting thing because it was like a magnet. Everyone sort of [joined in] on that thing, then I suddenly saw these people kind of going, 'Oh my god, far from being tired of LBP, I suddenly see this untapped potential,' " bubbled Evans.

"And in ways that hopefully will still be fresh so when it comes back, people won't be like, 'Yeah, they just exploited that thing, and it's really ****ing obvious that they would do that.' I think LBP is in their future, and hopefully in surprising ways," he continued.

A note worth making is that the PlayStation Portable version of LittleBigPlanet isn't the one being discussed by Evans above. Our bet is on some form of 3D platformer that is somewhat similar to a Ratchet & Clank style of game, but with SackBoy leading the way.

What do you guys think the geniuses over at Media Molecule have brewing behind those closed doors?

I reckon a dark, stealth game.

Kind of like Arkham Asylum but with Sackboy instead of Batman.

I wouldn't like a completely 3-D littlebigplanet but I do think there's room for expanding on their current ideas.  I think one thing would be to add the ability to script things from more  of a programming point of view.  I also think they could leave room for larger levels by having the system only load part of it at a time.  You could have unlimited sized levels that way and not have to cut back on your ideas.  A 4th level of depth would be nice too.

You mean like where you could build your own tracks and have hazards and stuff like fireballs coming from emmiters and everything? That would definately work, would be very predictable but would work.

Sackboy in Sony "Smash Bros" perhaps?

Sackboy can be "kirby" type of character in it...
Sackboy imitating Kratos's godly wrath or shocking (literally) foes with a bolt thanks to assimilation of Cole's (from inFAMOUS) abilities. haha

What about a game where sack boy is a giant reeking havoc on a city, like godzilla, or more like marshmellow man at the end of ghostbusters!!!

PS dunno if any one else has spotted sackboy in the lastest Rag Doll Kung Fu trailer. Although he looks a bit lanky!!!

I just started playing prince of persia and i have been thinking, what if they made a game like that with all the user innovation of littlebigplanet. I think that would turn out with some pretty amazing platforming. Hopefully its not just a 3D sackboy.

PS3 has been so desperate for a hit that they are going to milk Sackboy for all he's worth.  I agree that Little Big Planet is brilliant but stop wh*ring him out.  On a side note Ratchet and Clank is the best platformer of this generation which isn't hard since there are no many.

great, now if we all play online we will get nothing but lag.  Have they fixed the lag issue on LBP yet?

    • 3:03pm GMT - March 15th, 2009

No doubt LBP2 is gonna rock, but i really fear their style of change,i mean like ratchet and clank, please this game would`nt have been called a game if it wasnt a ps3 exclusive,so please Media Molecule dont ruin the game with you new ideas

I'm trying to figure out wether it would be harder or easier to make 3D levels in LBP.  You wouldn't have to make as many sacrifices with a 3d environment but then again you'd have to build the 3D environment in the first place.  I dunno if they could pull that off with the dev tools, not to mention what would happen to the 4player co-op from the first game.

How about a LBP where users can create and share their own stuff instead of paying 2.99 for some lame costume or object. Oh well, I've never seen anyone over the age of 16 that plays this game. My 12 year old niece loves it, I think that says a lot.
