Killzone 2 just debuted in Japan and sold very well considering its genre. PS3center reports that the game sold a very respectable 20,000 units on launch day, with some retailers scrambling to find more copies.

It's not a secret that the Japanese have little love for first person shooters. After the westernization of Metal Gear Solid 4, however, the region seems a bit more willing to give the genre a chance, as evidenced by these solid sales numbers.

Killzone 2 seems to be resonating with Japan's gaming press as well. Famitsu awarded the game 32/40 points (8/8/8/8), while Dengeki PlayStation's four scores were 90/85/80/80.

The best opening week in Japan for a first person shooter this generation was the debut of Halo 3, which sold just over 60,000 units its first week. Will Sev topple Master Chief? We'll let you know when the week concludes.

Wow, very nice. Japan getting some big numbers on a FPS is definitely something you don't see very often.

You bash ps3 on every article, Give it a rest.

If you read the article you would know why 20k is good for a FPS In Japan.

which is mostly a RPG country.

Color me surprised!  I don't expect KZ to be a blockbuster game in Japan but it's good to see GG putting their mark on a "hostile" market to FPS games.

It really was a damn good game in its own right, hype or no hype.

MGS4 wasnt all that westernized, What just because it has a first person view? and yet Kojima still talks about westernizing his games? Cant it just be that they want something Scifi that isnt another gundam game?

Damn I cannot believe Playstation fans didn't go out and support K2.. it was a great game and I believe should have atleast sold 2M through its first 30 days on the market.  Atleast someof the Japs are picking it up

Killzone 2 best shooter i've ever played hands down. I have halo 2 and halo 1. I've played halo 3 it's no fun... Halo 1 was amazing though. After that they started to decline, and it became too hollywood. Killzone 2 is also the smoothest best looking online FPS I've ever witnessed and its so gorgeous. Its so perfect. Peace.

lawl MGS4 is not a FPS

also i think KZ2 can outsell Halo 3's first week figures. after all, it did just get 20 000 in one day, imagine what it can do in seven days

@15 - I wasn't calling MGS4 an FPS. I was simply saying that since MGS4 included more western mechanics, Japanese gamers might be more willing to try western games.

so that makes it 1,020,000 sold!  i swear that must be off.  its got to have sold more than a mil.  my xbox friend has been playing this game nonstop, so it is a good game, sony just has to market their games more i guess.

Resistance 2 sold way more on first day then killzone 2 in japan. But resistance had a head start because when the ps3 first come out there was only a few games out one of them being resistance 1.

@radgamer, yeah it is pretty low, but FPS game in Japan generally sell poorly first day, but have quite long legs, so the sales pick up over time

My friend and I were in a game store in, and he who nevered played any FPS game, saw KillZone2 and said that he will buy the game after he buys Street Fgihter IV . I do think that this game will sell well in Japan. I myself dont play much FPS games but I really did enjoy playing this game.

@ 8 haha im glad you seen it aswell,radgamer420 bashes ps3 everychance he gets, just a xbox fanboy  flamming.

on a better note these are goodnumbers for one day of sales. kz2 owns halo3 so god knows why they scored it better.

    • 6:23pm BST - April 25th, 2009

why are we comparing this game to Halo, Halo is one of the worst game i have ever played, it is a huge noob fest online. Killzone pwns Halo anytime in my book

  36. mortada

    • 8:20pm BST - April 25th, 2009

killzone2 has better graphics, better physics, bigger worlds, but halo 3 will outsell killzone2 because every 360 owner is gonna get halo3,and every ps3 owner is gonna get killzone2(in japan),since the 360`s that are sold are more than the ps3`s....well...

  41. Strudel

    • 10:53am BST - April 26th, 2009

Eric I feel sorry for you, you write a great artical and all you get is this stuff from fanboys complaining that you compared it to Halo 3. The only reason why you did that is because it is the best selling western FPS, logically the target that KZ2 was made to beat.

At 20k sales in the first day it's a really good start, but time will tell if it can topple Halo 3s sales.

  42. oggydude

    • 7:30pm BST - April 26th, 2009

I'm not a FPS fan but kz2 looked too good to miss. I have to say it has to be the best FPS ive played.

20k is gd for japan but I think its going to be tight against kz2 vs Halo3
