SCEA responds to Activision's comments on PS3 support

Earlier today, Activision Blizzard’s Bobby Kotick talked about the possibility of cutting support and releases for the PS3 if there isn’t a price cut. SCEE then stated that while it “respects... third-parties’ opinions,” it “will not be commenting on this story.”

SCEA, on the other hand, responded with more than a "no comment," though the remarks are rather indirect and unconfrontational:

“PlayStation has tremendous momentum coming out of E3, and we are seeing positive growth with more than 350 titles slated to hit across all our platforms, including many anticipated games from our publishing partners.

“We enjoy healthy business relationships with and greatly value our publishing partners and are working closely with them to deliver the best entertainment experience.”

This could be interpreted in a number of ways, but we feel the mention of 350 titles and other publishers signifies an official “whatever” from Sony.

Exactly! Activision may forget that SONY is an entertainment behemoth. Activision is a company that creates games, while Sony isnt just that. The thing is that Activision wants to make EVEN more money out of ps3 (because ps2-ps1 were more succesful at start, they wished the same for ps3). So they make money now, but not as much as they wished for the same period as the older consoles.

activision believes that they're too great! first they try to ruin Brutal legend just because they're greedy and now they want to force sony to do what they say.

if I were on sony management, my message for them will be: don't let the door hit you on your way out!

sony could bring out an exclusive that would top mw2 in all areas, as they do with all other exclusives, particularly with their dedicated servers for exclusives unlike mw, great online but also the most frustrating at times

    @lord

100% agree!! I hate how they come out with 2 fps shooter games a year that have little to no differences. Its the same game with skin changes different maps and little to no actual gameplay differences. Dont even get me started on the GH fleecing. Why do they need to make 100 different GH games why not just new songs and fw updates to make everything compatable. F them, I lost all repect for them when they came out in M$ E3 conference and announced 2 map packs for a game that hasnt even been released yet(MW 2).  Why cant they just put it in the game!?!

My views on the matter thus far:

Activision are getting power-hungry. They've realised how popular Call of Duty has become; but it's more popular on Xbox than PlayStation; which, in turn, is a more popular console [Xbox 360]. As the development costs are the same for both versions of the game, but they're getting more revenue from Xbox suporters, they feel Sony isn't generating them enough profit. They're therefore getting greedy, feeling that Sony isn't worthy of their great franchise, so are threatening to cut them off as they think they therefore don't deserve it. They're letting the money get to their head, and think they have more power than they do in reality, so think they're able to threaten Sony by not supporting them. They therefore think they can pressure Sony into a price-cut, in order to sell more PS3s and subsequently increase the sales of the corresponding version of Call of Duty. What they don't realise is Sony is an incredibly powerful business, and won't be threatened by Activision. Sony's "Whatever" reply shows that they don't need Activision's support, but they are not pushing them away. By making this statement, they are reassuring Activision that they, in fact, are the dominant business, and are therefore using their power (which they actually have!) to discourage Activision's threats of lack of suport.

Although it's incredibly unlikely that this is true, this is how I see this "feud", and from what we're being informed of, it seems like a logical explanation for Activision's bold actions.

If anyone would like to comment on this, feel free to do so, as I'd love to hear other people's views and how you react to how I'm perceiving this dilemma.

You know while this may seem like a good thing. I can actually think of a number of companies who will do the same just because Activision did it first.

Hahahaha Activision FAIL's so much... I told you 400$ justifies the Playstation 3's price! Modern Warfare 2 I feel is a gigantic fail... Come on seriously that guy, that post's "Modern Warfare 2 will be the biggest thing since Jesus Christ died for us" I mean seriously come on!!!! These kind of remarks get me so freaking pissed I feel like bombing the crap out of them. (Not that I am, I might just play inFAMOUS and pretend I am bombing the Activision HQ) lololOLOL!

First off im sure their just mad because Sony pointed out the obvious which is thet WOW will be topped and pushed off its nerdy mmo throne... Also seriously Activision really?  Ok maybe you forget that Playstation as a band thats ps2, psn, psp, pspgo and ps3 is way more successful that M$ is in gaming... so yeah maybe you dont port over crap games from the xbox to the PS3 but if they deny the playstation brand all together that would be dumb because the global installed base of the Playstation brand is huge... Do me a favor Activision and just find another poor movie franchise to slap your name on so I can not buy it and not care.... I dont even play call of duty or guitar hero.. thanks!

Maybe they should drop the price of there games. That way they can sale more copys. Why is it up to Sony to sale there games for them? If there games are not selling a lot on the ps3 now what makes them think a ps3 price drop is going to change that? Call of duty sold a lot on the ps3 and they mad a lot of money from it so I dont know why there saying such things. There not going to stop making games for Sony. They would lose way to much money.

    C-O-N-S-P-I-R-A-C-Y!

The industry at this point feels like Sony will benefit everyone (not just Sony) by dropping the price of the PS3.  They want Sony to hurt themselves to benefit the the whole industry.  WHEN THEY KILLED THE INDUSTRY BY CATERING TO CASUAL GAMERS!!!

The industry (like other entertainment) killed itself with it's own greed.  Sony stayed the most true to what console gaming should be about (large variety of quality games, new features), and now hold the key to the industry's chances of making a rebound.  The WHOLE WORLD knows that people are itching to get a PS3 after a price drop.  First, they tried to kill the product entirely with a (still going on) viral negative media blitz.  Now that they see the pS3 isn't going to die, they want it to be cheap so more grandparents and parents who buy Hannah Montana games can get one (and use 12% of its other features).  Will Sony bend?  I hope they don't, honestly.  But there may be no choice.  On the other hand, it's an opportunity for Sony to take over and save gaming.

I have the exact same thoughts on Sony saving gaming. Everybody else wants it to be a pay to play society and sony is the only one standing up to this nonesense. What ever happened to companies making games for the best system to push gaming to the limits. Now its all about the $$. F MS, F Pay to Play, F Activison/ Blizzard, Quality over Quantitee FTW!!!

  26. mickice

    • 1:14am BST - June 20th, 2009

I think SONY has a reason to be all hight and mighty. Just look at their first party games, light years ahead of anything on any console. I can see SONY doing a SEGA route and only having first party games in the future.

  27. Lefein

    • 1:15am BST - June 20th, 2009

Never thought I'd see the day when gamers would boo a game maker away from their system..  I has a sad.  If the Activision guy read some of these comments, he'd probably laugh at us.

We need to be better than this.  Just because the Activision guy sounded snarky is no reason to act like "butt"hats ourselves.

Sony doesn't have to say anything.  The Sony fans will beat Activision for them.  And Activision's plan of Modern Warfare making the most money day one was flushed down the toliet when they made their remark.  Activision's Bobby Kotick  you must be stupid, like your name.

people here need to realize that the loss of activision would be a humungous blow to sony. why would you buy a ps3 if you know the biggest third party publisher doesnt support it. im just saying this to the people saying screw activision. as for what activision actually said, i think they are talking out there a*s.

  34. higgos22

    • 2:07am BST - June 20th, 2009

@1 it says activision not EA

    and lol yeh whatever

i seriously reading this want ps3 to do aswell as ps1 and ps2 did so then activision have to eat their words

and like actually like people actually remind them of this and bring this up when ps3 is like leading and has massive game attatchment rate

  35. toffyd

    • 2:17am BST - June 20th, 2009

    @31 and 32

The Call of Duty series has completely changed the way FPS's are today. Guitar Hero has been a big hit with many people, making other developers to make Rock Band from the success of Guitar Hero. Even though though those are really the 2 major selling products they are selling, they are selling MASSIVELY, and without a CoD on PS3, it will no doubt be very much a win for xbox, and i HATE xbox.

and no i dont work for activision.

    • 2:20am BST - June 20th, 2009

activi$ion can go ahead and take their (crappy) business elsewhere as far as i'm concerned, they have to be one of, if the the, WORST third party's ever, even though that doesnt really say much because imo all third partys suck anyway

  37. DudeManGuy

    • 2:20am BST - June 20th, 2009

    @tristen

I think activison needs to realize that sony is huge part in its life. I mean come on sony raised the brand from the begining, and sony had so much more going for it in those early years. you need to look athe facts and not he opinions of others,

    "WHATEVER" Activision!

  39. tarlachmgc

    • 2:24am BST - June 20th, 2009

I think MS might have a hand in this because there is no reason for a dev making millions off a console to stop supporting it. I think MS is worried PS3 will be getting more sales this christmas and this will cause any people interested in ps3 to go 360, look at the massive following cod has, imagine the boost that would be to 360 sales

  40. Alpha2

    • 2:48am BST - June 20th, 2009

Sony's response is simple; "we have a lot of publishers that still enjoy workign with us...." *long pause* meaning "make your move bltch".

activision would hurt sony by leaving but It would hurt activision too and sony's calling their bluff because they KNOW they can't actually do it without 1. pissing off fans and 2. screwing themselves. But of course Sony would be fine without them. We;ve got 3 or 4 first party FPS games to make up for call of duty, Rockband is better than Guitar Hero so no loss there. and ..... well what else do they have that we dont already have in abundance from some other publisher that isnt stupid enough to say they're going to bail?

After today I'm really thinking Kotick is close to being replaced. He's making too many controversial stands like this and thinking tha music lables should pay THEM for using their songs in guitar hero. Not to mention he's actively taking insentives from MS because they're lowering the residuals that have to be paid to them for every game they sell. So Activision basically pockets more money from MS and that's litterally the same as being in their pocket. All this stuff is making activision look bad, it's one thing to be trying to make money but you;re tarnishing the good name of a company much much bigger than you and that'll get the people above you, the people that pay YOUR paycheck wondering if you really deserve to stay in that seat.

@12: I edited the message and this site didn't update my changes, as you can see on my other comments I know I'm talking about Activision

so if you had nothing to bring to the discussion but to say that I made a "retarded comment" then I'm afraid my friend that the only one retarded is you. Everyone else had something to say about the news on Activision comments except you. So if you have nothing better to do, go take a hike lol

and I insists: Activision reeks! they won't make buy another activision game again, specially if they stop the release of Brutal Legeng!

if sony is good enough to create a game like God of War, they certainly don't need Activision and they won't miss them if they leave

Please, somebody fire that guy. Is he playing games at all, what does he know about games and consoles? Not so much to drop something like that. Does he think that 22 millions ps3 users will like that kind of comments? BTW Mr Kotick, ps3 sold as many xbox in 3 yrs as the xbox did in 4 which they killed right after. Ps3 is 10yrs cycle dude. Not 4. And beside, let's see the install based of the ps3 in a yr, after a price drop, GOW 3, Uncharted 2, MAG, GT 5 and final 13 which is ps3 only in japan. That is completly retarded. You just can't say stuff like that.
