Epic Games: PS3 price cut would have made Sony's year worse

Mark Rein, vice president of Epic Games, has stated that Sony’s financial woes would have only been exacerbated had the company opted to lower the price of the PlayStation 3 earlier this year.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Rein commented, “The truth is Sony has had a difficult year and I think they had to do what they had to do to try to be profitable,” adding, “They have their own financial issues to solve and lowering the price of the console would probably have made their situation worse.”

Despite this, Rein remains optimistic for the future, stating, “They will get around to it in their own good time. If you’re willing to look at this as a long-term play, they’re going to be just fine.”

Finally, he said he felt the industry was not quite ready to embrace “PlayStation 4 or the Xbox Whatever,” and believes the current generation of platforms will be sticking around for a while thanks in part to the new motion-sensing devices for Xbox 360 and PS3.

We really don't need a price cut anymore since, the PS3 slim is ment to come out later this year. Which should help the PS3 sales.

The PS3 needs a cut in price. But when I looked in store at xbox elite, they come out actually the same price, if you include having to buy a wireless dongle and gold subscription for a year.

Sony and all manufacturers know that selling stuff below production cost is not  good for long term.  Sony just needs to make ps3 more desirable. Price is not so important to people as they say. Look at iphone sales. Iphone has only been making things that nokia made years ago but branding them nicely and using touch screen and app store.

I do have respect for this guy,but i bet Sony's year would have been a lot better with a GeOW for the ps3.

Now don't you people get all mushy inside because he said something that makes sense. He's still a shill and his company is still responsible for UE3 (the most over-used, overrated game engine to date).

well that depends, sony have spent billions r&d on the ps3 slim, maybe a price cut instead would of been better or maybe not, wait n see in august and the economic situation pretty much guarantees no new console untill 2012 or so.

    • 4:38pm BST - July 23rd, 2009

i dont think sony should spend so much money on making a new version of the ps3 unless it has special fetures but its just smaller waste of money i say thats my opinion

  21. StoneDogAiel

    • 4:59pm BST - July 23rd, 2009

@19 - Sony has spent billions in r & d on the slim? proof? link it or it didnt happen.

    • 5:17pm BST - July 23rd, 2009

@21 i can assure you things are not invented and made for free and put together in bk of a shed.show me a case where a console has been in r&d  for free , hundreds of workers, new assembly lines, contracts to manufactures all done for free n saying look  at the shiny shiny. Get a job sometime, see how things work.

There's a reason why Epic has the kind of credibility with the industry as much as they ddo with the gamers.  I read a comment on her about Cliffy B, but the truth is even Cliffy showed some love to the KillZone 2 dev team.

Respect begets respect, which is why Epic will be good and strong when there is a PS4 or an XBox Whatever.  Short term thinking doesn't win you the kind of accolades these guys have been doing for years, now.  Epic = Win.  Always have.

@22: while your statement of nothing being free is true, sony has not spent billions of dollars on rnd for ps3 slim. with an operating revenue of ~$80 billion, billions of rnd dollars spent across the board is more believable.

for ps3 slim rnd, i highly doubt it's gone past the $100 million mark, let alone $1 billion. the majority of the work is done, streamlining manufacturing processes and downsizing part sizes don't require billions of dollars in rnd.

    • 4:22pm BST - July 24th, 2009

oh dear, the ad campaign alone will cost $100 mil bucks and if they do a wii or MS probly $300 mil.streamlined?? not very when the contracts have gone to the same company that manufactures the 360 just to keep costs down but still thats bulky and slim ps3`s being made,2 different products which costs alot and will tot up over the years unless they get rid of the bulky ps3 which i actually prefer.

    • 1:59pm BST - July 27th, 2009

    @19 & 20

What you gotta realise is the money they're putting into R&D for the ps3 slim won't only be for that but will be to develop smaller parts and cheaper parts. So in the long run its helping them by helping them decrease production cost for the PS3... I thought that'd be kinda obvious tbh
