Sony has revealed that it has sold approximately 23.8 million PlayStation 3 consoles globally since the machine’s launch in November 2006.
In addition, the conglomerate also announced that software sales have reached 189.7 million as of June 30, 2009. The numbers include PSN and retail-based software, as well as all publishers.
In comparison, Microsoft has shipped around 30 million Xbox 360 consoles to date, while the Wii has shipped in the region of 50 million since the Nintendo platform arrived in late 2006.
Over the weekend it was revealed that roughly half of all PS3 owners have signed up for PlayStation Network.

It's too bad the economy seems to be holding everyone down. But if we keep this in perspective then both the Xbox and the PS3 are doing about equally bad since the gap in units corresponds roughly to the year in advance the 360 has over the PS3.
BTW, I'm first... then again, who cares.

Well ,XBOX 30million sold unit cut could be cut in half since the owners have to rebuy their machine after while because it's not delivered with quality.
Got a couple of friends that hade to rebuy theirs ;)
Oh no I'm not a PSFAN...

PS3 was more caught up with the 360 last year than they are now, which means they've been losing worldwide for the last year.
The reason they were ahead last year was because of the price drop. I bet the same would be true for another price drop. Another price drop would rocket PS3 ahead of the 360.

When you think of it 360 are doing pretty bad which has had a year + christmas head start and is like £100 cheaper.

In some countries the Xbox 360 is completely forgotten about. I was in Turkey last week and the only next-gen consolses were the Wii and PS3 in stores. People just trust Sony for their reliability and quality. In the UK and USA people were just too impatient to wait for the PS3 and bought an Xbox. Most Xbox 360 owners would have previously had a PS2 anyway.

@ Bobtheduck
Nah the reason for this is that the average 360 owner is at his second console. lol And alot of them are at their 3rd or 4th.
Where I work we get at least 1 client a day asking how he can fix his 360. And he usually buys an arcade one and puts his old HDD on it ( when he doesnt need HDMI ). So if those numbers count maybe the 360 isnt so far off from the ps3 lol :P

It is rather annoying then that if Playstation is only about 6 million units behind xbox and yet if you go into most game shops you find one entire wall each for the Wii and 360 but PS3 still has to struggle with like one block of shelves!
anyway lets continue the positive retake of the market with the brilliant PS3!!!

I expect this trend to continue for the next year or so...The PS3 won't pick up sales until the end of the generation when people finally realize that the Blu-ray aspect of the machine is a nice feature. Until then though, most people are set with their gaming machines...this generation isn't going to be like the last one where most people own all 3. This time around it's going to be "yeah, I own an Xbox 360 and a Wii" or "I own a PS3 and a Wii"...it's unfortunate that a gimmick machine has managed to overcome the real consoles this time around. The only good outcome of this generation is that the Wii has probably helped many non-gamers realize that games aren't as bad as the media makes them out to be...

wow thats only 6million units ahead and thats peanuts in terms of worldwide sales, tbh its even lower cause you gotta take off all replacement 360`s for the rrod that MS insist as counting towards sales.year head start n cheaper then ps3 i would call it a epic fail for MS.
oh how MS must be cacking there kegs at the thought of price cuts and slim.

it's hilarious that "supposedly better" Brand x machine cant surpass the inferior wii at a LOWER price point but yet the PS3 is still gaining on it. But then again even though the wii has sold a 150 million it's consumer base is very different from either console and frankly shouldn't even be place in the same category but it's still funy to mention it.
While Brand x says they "shipped" 30 million PS3 has SOLD 23 million so the margin of people actually useing their system could be much closer than we think. When sony finally does see it possible to make a price cut that gap wil close pretty quickly.

Xbox 360 30m / 3.5years = 8.5 million consoles sold per year
Playstation 3 23.8m / 2.5years = 9.52 million consoles sold per year
hmmmmm looks like the only advantage MS has is that 1 year headstart, as expected.
Aside from that sony has outsold 360 when compared to similar timeframe. It also did this with a price tag of $600, $500, $400, respectively.

@ stef123
And you don't need to own a PS3 to sign up to PSN. My girlfriend has an account on mine. And I am pretty sure many people have their friends make PS3 accounts for stuff like LBP. So... thats it XD

Most of the 360's sales are due to the cheap crap(ier) model. Its the poor mans console.

Xbox 360 has only sold 6 million more than the PS3 with a year's headstart and multiple advantages within the industry? That's a joke really!
And considering the majority of 360 owners who had to buy their system again once it broke and was out of warranty, it more like 15-20 million 360s Vs. 23 million PS3s.
The PS3 get's so much abuse especially from 360 fanboys, but they they all need a reality check, because it performed better than the 360 in it's first year and with that current trend and it's exclusive titles bringing more people to the PS3, it could definitely outsell the 360. It's funny how people say the PS3 is doomed and that it will never reach the sales of the Xbox 360, but i'm telling you, it's perfectly capable.
