We got our first glimpse at gameplay footage of Square Enix’s upcoming new MMORGP, Final Fantasy XIV, and so far, the game looks stunning. The video capture comes from the folks at GameVideos, and was taken at GamesCom.
The graphics in the video, despite being recorded from a monitor, look incredible. We don’t speak German, so we can only guess that the presenter is bragging about how lucky he is to see this footage firsthand.

- No experience
- No levels
- A combination of combat and crafting classes
- Modular quest difficulty
Every MMO that has done this ended up causing the player to gring more than just xp and lvling.
At least with lvling there is light at the end of the tunnel, but with skill grinding... it never ends. You always end up grinding constantly for everything you want to do.
I hope this game comes out great though, but I am a bit miffed about the... ... I dunno what to call it as I cannot call it lvling system lol.
The graphics look nice, but they do remind me of Age of Conan.

@Nicholes
This character is more character and story oriented, I don't know where you got the idea that grinding would be necessary.

freaking awesome graphics considering it's pre alpha according to ign. I'm quite impressed and will probably be buying this depending on how they do the pay to play thing.

I agree with with #10 on this one. plus, mmorpgs are starting to get old and the companies making them are not justifying the monthly fees people have to make. All the new companies coming out with mmorpg's and this includs blizzards game "WOW" are doing nothing to justify the price of a monthly fee. They sit on their butts and rake in your $15.00 a month from everyone playing it. Then they sit there some more and may come out with 1 expansion every 2 years with not much of an effort put into them.
This skills system has been done so many times and the mmorpgs that have had this same system don't exist anymore because there was not 1 person playing after a year or so. Darkfall also does this same thing and that game is failing beyond belief as well.
This is not a good system at all for an mmorpg.

Well, I don't know about the system but SE made the most awesome MMORPG I have played, the missions, the world, the way they forced you to party was beyond everything the MMORPG world had, it created a new experience.
I played FFXI for 4 years in which a lot of my buddies jumped to WoW, but all of them never connected with the system, they were to busy solo leveling, complaining about why they should do stuff with other people or that the game dind't have PvP, of course the game was beyond all those things.
I left FFXI last year and as soon as the FFXIV announcement went live (actually since SE showcased Rapture project) I decided to come back because a MMORPG is not about cameras or PvP or grinding, is about the experiences you have playing with other people and in that area I say FFXI is better that all other MMORPGs I have played.

well graphics look good but... wtf is up with the chat box... SERIOUSLY the thing i love about ffxi is the chat box takes up the whole bottom of the screen, making it alot easier to chat and read combat log
now they just seem to have copied EVERY single other mmorpgs gui... nice one
