PS3 Slim sales are beyond expectations, says Sony UK

Sony has admitted that first week sales of the PlayStation 3 Slim in UK territories have vastly surpassed the company’s expectations.
Data from Chart-Track revealed that the launch of the revamped machine caused PS3 sales to skyrocket over 1000 percent. However, Mark Howsen, sales director for Sony UK, revealed that this number highly exceeded what the platform holder had in mind:
Speaking to GI.biz, Howsen commented, "The first week's Chart-Track numbers for sales of the new PlayStation 3 were ahead of our expectations, so we were extremely pleased.”
“A new price point and a new machine has proven a significant catalyst to help consumers make the move onto PS3."
Elsewhere, Howsen pledged that the company aims to sustain this momentum through a massive advertising campaign highlighting the console’s features and exclusive content, as well as services such as the PlayStation Video Store.
"Our new advertising campaign, The Game Is Just The Start, is also demystifying the value proposition," he continued. “This ongoing campaign and the addition of some great exclusive and new IPs - Uncharted: Among Thieves, EyePet, Heavy Rain - and services [such as] PlayStation Video Store, will hopefully provide even more trigger points to drive future purchases of PlayStation 3."
From the look of things, Sony’s fortunes aren’t just limited to the UK, with Japan also reporting a significant rise in hardware sales on the release of the PS3 Slim this past week. Hopefully we’ll hear how the platform is shaping up in North America soon enough.

sony needs to bring out some GOOD games instead of worrying about stupid console sales, theyll never beat microsoft as their marketing is so much better...concentrate on people who actually want to play some good games for once instead of worrying about who makes the most cash.

Sony look so pathetic now with their "added value to the PS3" philosophy...the Slim PS3 is something that gamers already wanted ages ago, Sony just didn't got along with the fact that the "normal" PS3 sold absolutely under their expectations. A Slim PS3 was inevitable at some point of the PS3's life circle, but compare to the PS2, a slim version of the PS2 came out a lot later compared to the recent launch of the slim PS3. That is because PS2 sold incredibly good and it made Sony the market leader. If the PS2's sales never had staggered or dropped they would never have even thought of a Slim PS2.
The idea of a Slim line of any console is not something that companies do to make us happy or because the look of the current version bores them, it's simply something that they do to boost their sales and in addition to that their profit, etc...read the headline again and you'll see that this just works fine!

Not shocked. Think about this. Buy a PS3 slim, cheap, free online, large library compared to just a year ago. Buy a 360, pay for online, no built in wireless, no blu ray, system breaks (and it will) get it repaired for free (annoying that you even have to), breaks again, pay for repair, breaks again, pay for new system, repeat cycle. Go through an act of congress with a guy who barely speaks english over the phone to get games you paid for to be transfered to new system. Hang up, keep calling back until you get an american who can understand what you are saying. That's a lot of work and money and essentially you are just paying for grief and headaches.

@15 it seems jelousy kills hah? ps3 slim isnt all about higher sales, and higher profits its about providing the ultimate entertainment experience in a way that is more comfortable to both gamers and sony, and thus everybody wins, except for microsoft and it`s pathetic excuse for a console the whity volgur ex-box.

*********NEWSFLASH**********
JUST IN - OBAMA SLAMS XBOX IN PUBLIC ADDRESS TO SCHOOLS
"Get your homework done, and don’t spend every waking hour in front of the TV or with that Xbox"
Now that the leader of the free world has publicly declared "that Xbox" , not the PS3 as a distraction to children we can safely assume that this will lead to a decline in Xbox 360 sales.

@18 and 28
You're both spot on! There's so many 360 fanboys out there that will stick to their console, defend the RROD, defend their Halo and Gears games and swear to never buy a PS3, because "it sucks and has no games", it makes me sick. On the other hand, I've heard about many former 360 owners coming over to the PS3 and with these sales numbers that's only obvious.
There are so many things that make the 360 a joke in terms of hardware, but very little for the PS3. So many more advantages to owning Sony's system.
The release of GT5, Uncharted 2 and God of War III will propell the PS3 even further, and I highly doubt it will end there.

I hope this will make Sony realise what a great fan base the unit has in the UK. They now need to start to realise the potential of this market and start to supply us with more content on the PSN first and not just as an after thought as it seems currently. They should also try releasing more PS1 classic games on the PSN for the UK & Europe. If you check the American PSN Store then you can download a vast quantity of classic games compared with the UK PSN Store. Sony please start to look after your loyal UK fans.
