Japan’s weekly gaming bible Famitsu magazine has confirmed that Sony’s PlayStation 3 has shifted over four million consoles in the region since its launch in November 2006.

According to the publication, PS3 has now shifted approximately 4,020,563 units in Japan, while the Wii recently surpassed the nine million mark. Global sales of Sony’s black behemoth currently stand at over 27 million.

The machine has recently enjoyed a considerable boost in sales thanks to the arrival of the revamped Slim model and price cut, along with the release of triple-A software such as Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

    Xenophobia has nothing to do with race but rather economic decisions to keep certain areas of the Japaneese market closed, resulting in a society that primarily purchases its own products.

    Because of the recession the US has recently put forward a "protectionist" type policy that results in forgien products being made less desireable via the use of surtaxes.

    Can't really accuse the US as being xenophobic (yet), too many Hondas, toyotas, Lexus, Infinity and Subarus sold there.  Electronics are almost exclusively Japaneese.  The PS2 sold 8 units for every 1 Xbox therefor no one can accuse the the US of xenophobia.

    Japan, different story.

    "Xenophobia has nothing to do with race but rather economic decisions to keep certain areas of the Japaneese market closed, resulting in a society that primarily purchases its own products."

    It couldn't possibly have anything to do with them preferring a game machine that isn't on borrowed time, eh?

    I guess any of the iphone products must be on borrowed time, they were DOA in Japan.  To name but one forgien product.

    @steviej

    If america isn't xenophopic because of their pruchasing habits outside of the console arena. Why would you do it for japan?

    Mcdonalds, levi jeans, Ipods/iphones, designer products from american celebrities such as paris hilton or britney spears... japan is not xenophobic.

    They do not support products out of some misguided loyalty to country. They purchase products that fit thier tastes.

    So if america cannot be considered xenophobic thanks to thier hardware and software preference then why pull the same crap with Japan?

    Is it me, or have people been using this excuse to try to downplay the 360's failure in japan? The concept is there is something wrong with the people and not the device right?

    @13

    Sony was highly successful last gen in the US (8 to 1).  The US purchasing habits i refer to are inside the console arena not outside.  The same ppl who purchased PS2s at a rate of 8 to 1 are now purchasing 360s

    Iphone products failed in Japan and their car market, among others, is closed to forgien products.

    Two more words, Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

    well I guess that's ok, but could have been way more if they started this friggin console war thing with the PS3 Slim right from the start, because obviously this is what the consumers are asking for, but what couldn't deliver the "old fat" PS3.

    This Wii thing already surpassed 9 million? WOW..I sincerely hope Sony can keep up.

    @17 if they started with the slim it wouldn't have been a slim it would be just a ps3

  19. Muzikguy

    • 8:58pm GMT - December 16th, 2009

    @18 you make a good point. Obviously it took Sony what? 3 years?, to come out with the slim? Who was going to wait 3 more years for the ps3 to launch? It's just a matter of time I think. PS3 is closing in on the 360 and if americans would just stop buying the M$ box (wishful thinking), all would be great in Sonyland. Although, if there's a sudden rise in sales in Japan for the PS3 it shouldn't take long to pass the 360.  :)

    @21....But xbox sells here in America...Sony is a japaneses corp and thats their home land. MS sells plenty here at home. Plus this is only the second xbox and they are doing extremely well. They are ina good position to take this gen.

    @14 lol

    That has nothing to do with hiroshima and nagasaki it is all the more to do with the fact that US made cars use way more gasoline. Not only the price of the cars and the petrol they use but also some more thoughts on the green stuff make sure japanese and cars from the far east in general sell better then US made cars in both the far east and europe.
