Final Fantasy XIII director Motomu Toriyama has conceded that if he were to go back and remake any title in the franchise, it would without a doubt be the PSX classic, Final Fantasy VII. Surprised? Thought not.
“That would be Final Fantasy VII!” said Toriyama.
“If we had the manpower and the time to work on a project,” he continued, adding, “if we were to remake Final Fantasy VII with the quality of Final Fantasy XIII it would become a tremendous project.”
“If we can get the number of people we need by all means that would be the one I would really want to remake.”
If for some reason you have yet to indulge in this classic slice of RPG goodness, be sure to head over to the PlayStation Store and download the game for a bargain price – you won’t be disappointed.

@1, I agree 100% with you, it would be nice to see a remake of it, they need to stop their complaining and get to work.

But not like the XIII... Just imagine.. A linear FFVII, without town, shop... Square Soft was Great, not Square Enix...

Figures, even the dev's are hung up on the worst game in the series. I just don't see the appeal; any of the SNES FF's were 100x better than that piece of junk.

Well they have Eidos under them now so I mean, That's man power right there. If their deal with Tecmo has been successful that would've been enough man power right there. But if you PERSONALLY ASK ME ALL THEY NEED TO DO IS GET AGITO XIII AND VERSUS XIII OUT OF THE WAY AND THE WHOLE SQUARE ENIX TEAMS FULLY FOCUS ON ONE TITLE INSTEAD OF TRYING TO DROP MANY GAMES IN ONE YEAR LIKE STAR OCEAN IV, NIER, FFXIII, FM:EVOLVED, FFXIV, AND MANY GAMES. TRUST ME THEY HAVE ENOUGH MAN POWER FOR THE PROJECT YOU'LL THINK THEY'LL BE ATTACKING MORE THAN 256 PEOPLE ON MAG....SQUARE ENIX JUST LOVE TO COMPLAIN AND WHINE BUT THEY DO IT...THEY JUST BEEN SIPPIN A LITTLE WINE TOO MUCH THIS GEN...THATS ALL..

I've said it several times: FF VII doesn't need a remake. It is availabe on the PSN for everybody to enjoy it. People that want a remake are simply saying that graphics are what matters, and FF VII it's not about the graphics. Characters, great sotry telling and fantastic gameplay is what made this game the king of the RPGs.
Just make FF XV to have the same combat mechanics has FF VII. That would be much better then a remake.
Gambits? Paradigmas? The h€ll with that.

Oh man, this sounds like a dream job. My head is filled with ideas and concepts to make the series great but keep the old style feel.

i have a feeling that IF they do make it, itll go multi platform. Toriyama saying that it will be a "tremendous project" just sounds like a lotta $$$, which can mean multiplatform. Hmm i wonder if SE wants to cut back on towns because itll result in 5+ discs if it goes over to the 360. Just some random thoughts, im not hating on anything here.
If they do remake the game, i wouldnt just want updated graphics, but obviously additional gameplay. Now that i think about it, i dunno if i want an exact remake of the game anymore, cuz i wud already know whats going to happen. Keep the characters and maybe just tell the story in a different way. i dunno, now im just rambling =P
But yes, FF7 was my fav. i didnt dig 8's love story, and 9 was just ok for me. If i had to pick another FF besides 7 to remake, it would definitely have to be FF6.
Of course there will be people who will think that FF7 isn't the "best" FF game. However, FF7 has already been made into a franchise of its own via movies or other games (dirge of cerebus, crisis core). No other FF game has had those extensions (correct me if im wrong). However, to the haters' defense, maybe FF7 is he most popular FF game because it was the first FF on playstation, and during that time, playstation 1 was becoming a huge hit. Maybe FF7 was the first FF game for a lot of the PS1 owners....who knows. Anyways peace yall

This is getting better by the minute. Not counting the numerous fans who want the remake, we now have the director of FFXIII saying that he is up for it. This is great news. But they should really get to the part where they start going it instead of promising it all the time. But we are going in a right direction. I agree that square enix should concentrate all their staff in bringing the remake as fast as possible. If it takes a full year, then it takes a full year. We will be waiting. And if it needs to be released on xbox 360 as well, so be it. I can understand the business side of things. It would be stupid to cry for a remake and then bash square enix for trying to maximize the profit as much as they can. I would say a remake on the xbox 360 would be a 3 disc as well. FFVII had videos, but not as many as FFXIII. They could even release it on Wii. FFVII is such a great game that I do not think you should be deny the chance to play it because you own a different console.

I know I'm wrong, but It got me thinking: what if FFXIII Versus is really FFVII?
That whole business about the game having an airship and towns...
So far we have only seen cgi pictures a vague outline description. Both could have been doctored to look like another game and turn out to be the best well kept secret in gaming industry. (this if final fantasy fan delusion. LOL)

Let me tell how I feel. After Cloud receives is remake treatment and square enix sees the sucess of such endevour, I expect Mr. Leonhart to be given the same makeover (FFVIII is second only to FFVII), and wouldn't mind if Zidane was third in line. As for FFX and FFXII, they don't need the remake. The graphics stand their ground as their are today and word is that sony is cooking up a sheme to lets us buy ps2 games on the PSN so we can play them on the ps3. But retro-compability is still out of the question.
But priority is FFVII. That's what got us here in the first place and that's the only way were gonna shut up for a long while. -

If he was passion about the game and actually would like to remake it, do you really think you will get much support from fans you have been crying out for a remake. I'm glad you're like one in a million. Let him remake it. He is into the new tools square enix has developted and with him leading the project I'm sure the project would move pretty fast. And since FFXIII has been selling alot, I'm inclined to think SE might actually buy this whole idea and let him go forward.

@28 I agree, but after all they've said it seems it would be more likely that it would be 3 blue-ray discs for PS3, and like 30 discs if not more for the 360, the sheer scale of the game would be impossible on any other console but the PS3.

It's the second time someone posts "@28" and I believe I'm it. Must be saying something right. I don't know how much space it would take for a FFVII remake in the same quality as FFXIII. I think a blu-ray has enough space for all the towns and adventure in FFVII with the remade cutscenes. The good part about the quality of the recent one is that some could be made with ingame graphics. As for the conversion for the xbox360, i read somewhere that if they had taken some time in perfecting the game, the 3 dvds would be enough for the game to be on-par with the ps3 version. Remember that for the ps3, only 6.8gb are game content and the remaining 32 being high quality 1920x1080 video. I think that with some more time the xbox version could have been a little better, but the question here is exactly taking more time. They needed to release both versions at the same time and test if the xbox would do ok. It did.
But I will leave the multi-platform issue to them. If they see it fit to release it like xiii on both consoles I say go for it. Like I said before, don't see the reason for all this high caliber games being released on just one platform.
I'm much more worried this teasing will go on for ever. But the director wanting to remake the game is a very good omen for all of us. I doubt Mr. Sakaguchi would be interested in remaking is own game. He was his own new projects, so I'm more than happy to be in the very capable hands of Mr. Toriyama.
One thing is for sure, whatever FFXIII Versus is, it's also coming home with me. -

Well, seeing as how SE has been doing FF remakes for Nintendo on the DS this gen, and no matter how many times SE says they WOULD love to do a remake, I believe they will do it. It's just a matter of when they will have time. But for me, I want to try out Versus and Agito before we receive FF7 remake.

Actions speak louder than words. This whole "oh we'd really like to do it" and "we don't have the manpower/money/guts/blah blah" talk is not doing anyone any favors whatsoever. Every time I see news titles like this one I keep thinking to myself that they must be working on it and just teasing. If that is true then it better be at least 2 times better than the original. Else just do us all a favor and STFU already. Talking about something that isn't going to happen is a waste of oxygen.

Maybe teasing with us all the time is the perfect aliby. We'll never now what hit us when they release it and we go: huh? They've been doing the remake the whole time? (one again, final fantasy fan wishful thinking). But yes, Versus sounds very much like a worthy addition to the saga. I kust hope it keeps the model of rpg and doesn't go to a different genre like FFVII Dirge of Cerberus. That one did not appeal to me particulary.

Let it go already ... VII was good but not that good, if they would make a remake of any PSX FF then i sure hope they pick FF VIII. Rinoa was hawt but i would love to see her in high def. Any way as long as they keep selling both the PSX disc version of both FF VII and VIII and the PS3 store downloads they wont make a remake as that would be cannibalizing there sales.

I wouldn't mind FFVIII to be remade after we get VII remade. For the moment, myself and several other miillion want VII remade with the quality of XIII. VIIs story was "unique". As for the part where the game is doing well on psn I will just copy part of my post on "criticalgamer": I’m betting the game sells well because some fans lost the discs or they’re scratched and unplayable. Square knows this, and I know for a fact that when Final Fantasy VII - The Final Cut (I like this name a lot as I think this game is comparable to Blade Runner) is released, it will break all game selling records.
