PlayTV release date announced; will record whilst playing games

The rollout of PlayTV in Europe will begin in just under two months time. The first country to receive Sony's clever little Freeview box will be the UK on September 10 followed by the rest of Europe by December.
PlayTV is Sony's digital video recorder with built-in Freeview for PlayStation 3. It will let you watch digital TV, browse what's on with its slick Electronic Programme Guide (EPG) and let you record a different channel to the one you're watching. You'll be able to set it to record entire series of programmes as they're shown, as well as record whilst playing games.
That last part was a hefty challenge for Sony, but David Reeves, President of SCE Europe, said it was planned right from the start.
"It was very difficult for some of the tech guys but we had to include it in the firmware upgrade, 2.41, but it's done now."
So come September 10, and assuming you get hold of a PlayTV unit, you'll be all ready to go. Reeves has previously revealed that PlayTV will retail for €99, but a UK price has yet to be announced. Those of you in Australia and New Zealand will also be able to get your hands on the sexy device in January or February.

Alright, I know this is cool and all but am I the only one who thinks Sony should put more effort into making the PS3 a gaming machine, rather than a total entertainment. I have cable and what not for my entertainment, and then I hav my PS3 to play games and watch movies.

cowkong, I like this kinda stuff with my games. Good games are coming and this stuff is just icing on the cake, though I am Canadian so i get neither the Movie download service or Play Tv as of yet..............sure would like it though

the US doesn't get because we're not digital tv... Play TV is. it suks! I live in the US and i want this, but at least it's cool for Europe who finally gets something 1st.

Did it ever occur to you guys who says I wish Sony would concentrate on games has other divisions than just games and maybe, just maybe they have a dedicated team to work on additions such as these. I could've sworn KZ2, R2, LBP, etc. are still coming. Chillax!

You know technically Europe is richer then the US, However unfortunately the US has a unified people and army which Europe doesn't really have. but anyway it's too bad for the US I'm gonna shred my passport and move back to London! I sound english nobody will tell the difference!

Why are some of us Americans complaining about this? I for one am glad the UK and EU get something before we did, they've been getting the lower end of things lately and it must feel good for them to get something we here in the US wont get for awhile.
