GTA IV developer gives insight to game length

Posted on March 29th, 2008 at 12:35 EDT

Many of you will recall that Grand Theft Auto IV has approximately 100 hours of gameplay worth playing; however, it was never confirmed as to whether this was actual single-player storyline gameplay or if it included all of the side missions as well.  Jeronimo Barrera, a senior developer at Rockstar, has given a bit of insight on the timing that it has taken most game testers to complete the single-player campaign of GTA IV:

"...it takes testers playing 4 hours a day, a good 2 weeks to get through the whole single-player game.”

If these game testers are throwing in overtime on Saturday and Sunday, this would figure out to be roughly 56 hours of legitimate story playtime.  It makes perfect sense that this would be the case considering you can usually spend countless hours completing all of the side objectives within a Grand Theft Auto title.  Even though it is more likely they spent 40 hours completing the experience, that is still a substantial amount of time for just the main story of the game.

As the day of release draws near and everyone's anticipation increases steadily, we'll bring you anything else new regarding this title.

We can all pretty much agree that The Incredible Hulk has been nothing but a disappointment not only in the movie department but in the videogame section as well.  W...

I hope it takes even longer so the episodic content means nothing. I'm so glad I haven't seen a 'First!' post in a while. Thanks guys.

I think this game will be much longer than San Andreas. Not only that but the share amount of side missions and radio content. M$ extra content not significant for now. Plus Sony can always have extra content done up for them.

Hmmm. If those testers played for 4 hours a day for about 2 weeks to get through the whole single player portion of GTA4, it will take me about 3 months or longer because when I play GTA games, I don't go straight through the game. I'll do 3 or 4 missions and then I'll roam around and explore new areas for an hour or more and then I wont play again until the next day. It probably took me about 2 months to beat San Andreas because of the way I play the GTA games.

GTA4 will easily last me until Killzone 2 comes out. We've got  just another month to go!

I saw a TV show once that looked at why video games are so expensive, and they said they price games at an average of $2 per hour of game play, so each game should last 30 - 40 hours, if that's correct that means GTAIV is well worth $60 XD

I've been trying not to think about GTAIV and complete my other games right now. I completely forgot about online for this game. I think I've already spent 300 hours on COD4, so GTAIV will be even more than that.

No matter everyone reaches a free roaming phase which leads to hours of procrastination that leads to disaster, game-wise and real life.

I'm surprised devs can still make games over 15 hours long.  Just goes to show some games cough Heavenly Sword cough need to be longer.

It took me 70-71 hours to finish GTA San Andreas 99.66% (I only had to get 1 more gold medal on the driving school) playing about 2 hours a day (after school) and 5 a day on weekends. GTA IV should take me a while though considering I will be standing staring at the city in awe over the sheer size and visual quality.
Also, mmm physics.

PSN ID! ReppinDaNorth21...Okay GTA4 obviously will be a great game. Besides the fact the story will be long 56 hours pretty long and thats good. You will have more hours then 56 jsut for the simple fact I know everyone will just shoot go off and shoot random people and get the police after them. Ive done it and I am sure others have too. Best part will be the online on this game...without the online its a great game..with the online it can be one of the best ever. The only problem I have is the online can be very bad, worse then COD4(i hope its not) and if it is then this game will not be as good as it can be. The video game industry is changing its more or less about a good story+having a good online experience.instead of jsut beating a game now you can go online and play other people. Witch is an exciting feature and I hope it only gets better.
