It is no secret that it has been the player’s expansive mind that has forwarded the gaming industry in a number of ways. One of the greatest user mods, Counter Strike, which was based from the Half-Life engine, allowed developers to finally consider gamers as a major source for new and creative material.
It is the greater amount of player creations aka, Mod Community, which keeps things fresh. Developers of Call of Duty 4, Infinity Ward have embraced this concept and are looking to implement it in their very own grand scheme of things.
With Call of Duty 4 being well received by the media and public alike, even winning PSU’s Game of the Year, the experience needs to remain fresh in order to keep players coming back for more. That is why Infinity Ward is looking to the mod community as a major source for their new flood of maps to be released.
“On March 31st, we’re going to be choosing our favorite community made maps and award the map makers of our favorites picks with special prizing and opportunities which we can’t announce just yet but will be in the very near future (probably within a week).
”However the clock is ticking to get your map designed, as I said, we’ll be choosing our favorite community made custom multiplayer maps on March 31st.”
While they do not state directly that they plan to utilize some of the user created maps for their game, they at least hint at the possibility by commenting, “with special prizing and opportunities which we can’t announce just yet”.
Either way, if you believe you have the talent, hit up the code and create something unique as you may likely have a map featured in COD4 to be played by millions.

Great Idea, this concept will keep COD4 playable for a long time.
Seems cool I hope the maps are very interesting, and fun!
It would be awesome if all developers alowed mods for their games!! Imagine that!
New maps would be cool. I'd like to see some new ones.
I've been messing around with the mod tools for a while now but I don't have the time to make a whole map because it would take me too long being the perfectionist that I am! =) I look forward to seeing at least one user-created map as a download.
I never had the time or energy to get into modding, but I respect what they do and thank them. I'll be happy to get some new maps to play on for COD4. A huge battlefied at night time where its almost pitch black would be cool. The only map I know of where using your NVG is somewhat helpfull is Wetworks. Most people (including myself), really cant stand that map.
Will i be able to play these maps in split screen mode on my PS3?
@chelseapaul Good question, and i hope that they will be available for splitscreen as believe it or not some of us do have friends that come over.
It would also be nice for these maps to be a little larger as the ones on the game are pretty small.
Great idea, but IW will be the one, IMO, that approves what gets out to the fans. Also, I would imagine that they will only be downloadable for a price unlike UT3. Who knows.... maybe MS would allow their release on LIVE for free... NOT.
Nice... wish i knew how to create/mod a map... Now that be cool if the maps are free for ps3 and not for xsuk60... but i dont see that happening
User created content is where it's at. Thats why LBP gets such an eye from everyone. IMO anyways.
@ Xdeth
Couldn't agree with you more about wetworks that map is a waste of time. I have been asking myself that same question as to why there is Night Vision but no night time maps for it to be used on. I also never really got into modding but i hope someone who can makes a "Night Time" map, I think that would be sweet, to watch a kill cam in Night Vision mode for a Change.
It's probably just for the PC,since it will be HUGE if they actually allowed modding the console version.
No, a night time map would suck... HOWEVER, a map in which a block of flats is pitch black would be great. storming it would be fun and challenging.
i would assume this would only be for the PC only...with UT3 on the ps3 the ability to add mods was built into the initial code,so im slightly dubious if infinity ward could pull it off???(maybe a patch)??
i hope im wrong though ;)
OK for all those who are a bit confused as to how it works. You go here: http://www.infinityward.com/tools.html and download the tools then follow the steps.
Then on March 31st Infinity Ward will then pick their favourite and hopefully they will release it for download across all platforms (after some tinkering from them of course).
Sweet, the great games just get better while EA whines about PS3 development.............
Someone needs to do the Stalingrad map from MoH:AA. Best multiplayer map ever!
