Speaking at its second quarter financial results last night, Take-Two revealed that the critically acclaimed Grand Theft Auto IV has sold 8.5 million copies to date out of the 11 million units shipped to retail.
The company also revealed that BioShock, which is headed to the PS3 later this year, has sold a total of 2.2 million copies to date.
Take-Two Chairman, Strauss Zelnick, commented, “Take-Two’s performance has exceeded expectations through the first half of fiscal 2008, clearly demonstrating the creative, operational and financial strength of our business.”
“Our results reflected the extraordinary success of Grand Theft Auto IV, the value of our catalog of titles, and our ongoing initiatives to improve the efficiency of our operations. We look forward to continuing to enhance stockholder value by building on our broad portfolio of internally developed and owned interactive entertainment brands, leveraging the opportunities in the current industry cycle, and operating our business in an effective manner.”
Grand Theft Auto IV has proven to be a runaway hit on both sides of the Atlantic, receiving unanimous praise from both critics and gamers alike, becoming the biggest selling entertainment launch in history.
The game rocketed to the top of the charts across the globe, and has yet to be knocked of its pedestal in the UK, where it has held the top spot since its release on April 29.
