You can use any 2.5 hdd and it will work. The problem is the BGA spot that use solder balls are melted and must do the reball process to connect the GPU to motherboard due to the heat. The USB ports won't case any problems even if they are damaged which means only it will not work.
Sony is will known to close their gaming online servers after 5 or 6 years as the game will be dead. But for the PS3 online servers I don't think they will close it down as people still using it but they won't update the store as they said last years.
I live in Canada but I'm sure you will not find a cheap brand new PS3 system in UK as it's hard to find them anymore. Even if you will find one it will expensive. Your best is to import one from China or Japan as they will have lot's and it won't be cheap so much. I did that and bought 3 systems...
