Yup, the PS4 will have the best OS name behind it. Glad to hear it.

We know that the Xbox One has one operating system that’s similar to Windows 8, but the gaming OS is shrouded in mystery.
    Well, that's $#@!.

    lol yeah probably.

Good that they didn't go with that, as that would have placed un-necessary expectations to OS if the console was named after it also.

Not truly a surprise. Sony has been using linux type OS's for quite a few years now. Makes sense to take what they did on the PS3 and extend it as well. Would be kinda nerd cool if there turns out to be a way to let you see what's going on in the command line on the PS4 or something like that.

How many gbs are reserved for the OS? X1's OS takes 3gbs up, so I'd love to see the OS for PS4 be less than that.

I don't think that's the name of the OS, it's probably some old leaked image from one of the earlier devkits when they were still code naming it Orbis.

Free BSD means this is closer to OSX in terms of technology base than Linux (Mind you Linux is simply a Kernel and nothing more) that said it really isn't relevant. At least it's running a fairly stable non Monolithic system that should allow for quick turnaround of technology updates. So in other words the complete opposite of Ps3 that had quick updates at first but slowed as additional technology become more difficult to implement and test.

Rumored to be 1GB for Ps4 so much lighter on the hardware. Remember MS decided to run 3 OS's at once (2 OS running on top of Hyper V) which could make up date hell later in the machines life cycle but that's just theoretical.

I REALLY hope that 1 gig OS rumor is true. That will give the PS4 a 2 gig advantage, memory wise, on the actual games. We won't see many games that take advantage of it early on, but before the end of the gen, a lot of games will need the full memory.

Of course, now games will be held back by the lower memory availability on Xbone.

I find one Gig for an OS quite a lot.

Correction 1GB for the Wii U's OS is quiet a lot. For what Sony are doing with Ps4 it's a much more appropriate size.

I think it's likely true that only 1GB of memory is reserved for the OS. I THINK Sony learned their lesson with the PS3 and will leave some room for expansion if some new whiz-bang feature comes to light that they need/want to incorporate. Seriously, I'd rather they leave an "unnecessary" extra 512MB or so just for feature expansion, but maybe that's overkill anyway. We'll see.

If rather run Linux be we all know how that went last time XD
PCs are very much like Air Conditioners.
They both become utterly useless once you start to open up Windows....
