I like the way most BD movies are presented, so i should have no issues with the black bars or the 2.4:1 aspect ratio. Sacrificing 280 vertical scan lines may give them more processing power on the ps4 for AA and that is fine, aliasing on a large screen is quite distracting. And the way they're opting, isn't going to give a vertical stretch on your screen, like someone above spoke of, so the point of 'upscaling' becomes redundant.

Does a 1080P game run on a 1080P screen really need alising?

I can't tell since my screen is 720P and Knack and Killzone look pixel perfect.

    Check for yourself

    Both are full 1920 x 1080 resolution.

    No AA
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...20aliasing.jpg

    4x MSAA
    https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/...20aliasing.jpg

I made them links so can switch between browser tabs and notice easier.
The highlighted area is the most obvious but is possible to notice the difference in aliasing in other areas.

I guess you do. I think they should keep 1920x800, it'll give this game a unique cinematic feel and if they can stick 4xMSAA on that? Wonderful.

As this is going to be a single player only game I prefer that they do everyting they can to make this game looks as good as they can. I don't care if it's letterboxed, that doesn't bother me at all, I'm used to watch movies in that format. If this game is designed with a 2.40:1 aspect ratio in mind, then it will benefit from that format and make it a better experience, IMO. I really hope that they plan to make this game very horizontally oriented, if not, the 2.40:1 aspect ratio will feel like a compromise.

@Fijiandoce, @TGO: I meant to quote Rapture. I saw you already answered his question. Sorry about the confusion. :P

    Why not this?
1664 * 936 = 1,557,504 pixels. An odd resolution, but it has as much pixel detail as the above while maintaining the 16:9 aspect ratio.

    Problem solved.

Yeah I'm sure I'll get over the letterbox thing. When I watch a movie in that format I'm annnoyed at first but I soon forget about it as I get into the movie.

Letterbox doesn't really bother me. I think it used to, but it isn't an issue for me at all these days.

Should be pretty good looking game in terms of image quality stability.
In addition to 4xMSAA they do some interesting things with surface shaders to get rid of specular aliasing.

No, the game has always been presented in Cinema screen mode. Director's choice.
It's not a down resolution, they just aren't writing those lines. The signal will be 1080p no upscaling. It's still 1920 pixels per line.

I hope that's a joke? Because why it might be their is compromises, I'm sure every other gen of hardware had games at the start had to do the same to they learned the system and how to better code for it and access more power.

I'm looking forward to killing monsters with Tesla weapons in steampunk Victorian London. What effect will this resolution issue have on my enjoyment of said activity?

To be fair you tend to zone in, I didn't even notice in the Dark Knight when it switched back from iMAX, but sometimes I did
With a game you'll be more into it so you'll probably forget about it once ya playing for while.

This is where it can get confusing with all the attention currently on screen resolutions.. The way this particular game is being done is different to the 720 and upscaled to fit a 1080 screen where several of the screens pixels are mapped to a single game pixel. This one will be 1 to 1 pixel mapped so the image that will be on the screen will be of the same quality as any game rendered in native 1080.

If it really bothers anyone, they can use the Zoom aspect ratio on their TV, lol. Then you'll get punked by things from offscreen.

I play on my PC on a 32inch HDTV in a bean bag from about 5ft away....and I don't get it.

1080p makes jaggies less apparent...the higher the resolution the less the jaggies. I play numerous games on PC at 1080p and the jaggies just aren't that big of a deal.

I would have rathered 1080p, personally.

Not with this.. the way they are reducing from 1080p is to black out the top and bottom portions of the screen. The image will be rendered at exactly the same resolution as it would be if the image was 1080p. It's not a lower resolution image, they're just using less of your display so it won't be any more or less jaggy than it would be if they were using the whole screen @ 1080p because it's not being upscaled to fit..

That's exactly what you're getting, LOL!

4xMSAA for even less jaggies - at the same horizontal resolution as 1080p.

Essentially, this is a 1080p image with the top 140 and bottom 140 rows inactive and the center 800 rows active.
The purpose for this is to frame the action in a Movie Like 21:9 format.
For instance, there's nothing stopping them from putting foreign dialog subtitles in those black bars when they meet foreigners!
They could even eventually decide to put menus and items in that empty space, which i'd gladly prefer.
