In fairness, 3g capabilities haven't been shown off, and we don't know the potential with it. ATT didn't have a booth at e3, so 3g was not demo'd at the conference. I imagine once psv gets jailbreaked or whatever, maybe? Idk. We'll see lol.

In all fairness 3G doesn't need to be "shown off". It's been "shown off" for years. To who may you ask? AT&Ts customers.

Well, true.

I was just hoping there was something neat that hasn't been done with 3g that the vita could introduce, but I guess not. Other than GPS..which has been here for years.

Is the vita adding the android marketplace? I remember hearing that somewhere.

With the carrier being AT&T in the United States, it doesn't surprise me that a lot of people are doing what I'm doing... Holding off to see if there's going to be some kind of deal with renewing the contract.

I'm on an unlimited data plan that AT&T doesn't offer anymore. I get it grandfathered because I was an iPhone user before they changed their rates. If getting a 3G PS Vita means I have to switch to a metered plan, I'd DEFINITELY stick with the cheaper WiFi model.

If you don't have AT&T, I wouldn't expect you to understand that, so I offer that as an explanation.
3G is much better than WiFi.

With 3G you can go anywhere and play online.... IMHO that's a massive advantage.
You won't be able to play online using 3G. That's been said in an interview.
How about we just try to get 3G coverage more widely available before jumping into 4G

Sure, that's logical. But when has that ever been a concern in the Age of Information?

It makes sense. A 3G Vita is not as attractive with all the wifi hotspots around and the fact that all smartphones can tether.

I'll be getting the wifi only as well.

It may not matter anymore what carrier they went with. It seems they are all going down the same path in the US.

Starting July 7th, Verizon will no longer offer unlimited data with their 3G plans. They will have grandfathered type option like AT&T.

We knew that July 7 was going to mark the beginning of something after Verizon extended out the free 4G hotspot promo one more time to the 6th, but what we weren’t 100% sure of was if it would have to do with tiered data. Employees have been receiving training over the last couple of weeks on a new point-of-sale system along with new account management tools that hinted at family plan changes, so again, we knew that something was definitely on the horizon, just weren’t sure exactly what. Well, we’ve just received word that tiers are scheduled to start the day after the promo ends (on the 7th) for new customers and will look something like this…

Data plans:
2GB – $30/month
5GB – $50/month
10GB – $80/month

If you would like to add tethering on to any of those packages, you can purchase 2GB of data at an additional cost of $20 per month.

Data plans w/ tethering:
4GB – $50/month
7GB – $70/month
12GB – $100/month

If you go over your purchased amount of data, it will cost you $10 per 1GB.

Tablet data plans will now go to $30 for 2GB of data as well instead of $20 for 1GB of data that is currently available.

*Note 1 – We have also been told that this is for both 3G and 4G smartphones and that there are not separate plans depending on device. So if you are under contract currently, you should be fine and don’t need to run out and buy a 4G phone just to lock in as we’ve seen other sites seem to want to suggest.

*Note 2 - And I should probably clarify that these new prices should not affect anyone that is currently under contract. Major changes like this concern only new customers and possibly those that are up for a renewal. We have even heard mention of current customers being allowed to upgrade to a new device after July 7 though, and continue to keep their unlimited data, but are awaiting further clarification on that.

Surprised by these numbers?

Update: If you’d like to see additional confirmation, then check out this letter we received that has been sent out to Verizon employees by VPs.
Update 2: Head of Verizon Communications confirms tiers are coming in July.
Update 3: It’s looking like current customers may have unlimited data for life.

Let’s look at how they compare to AT&T’s tiers:
200MB – $15/month
2GB – $25/month
4GB – $45/month

So each plan is essentially $5 more per month, which Verizon will likely justify by saying that they offer a more reliable 3G network and a faster 4G LTE network. We knew they were coming – let me know what your thoughts are.
This is definitely developing…
Per month? its very expensive.

thats 600 dollar per year for a slow mobile connection

Haha no I meant the price diff between wifi and 3G models :)
Well, you'll still have to account for the contract price per year factored into the overall cost of owning the 3G version.
Not to mention the main reason you want it is so you can play anywhere.... well, you can't. You can't play games via 3G, already been confirmed in an interview; as someone already posted.

In short, 3G is turd. It has always been turd. At least here in the uk. It was turd when it was launched, and it's turd now. Plus, it batters the battery on most mobiles so i can't imagine how the vita will be 3G wise. As for 4G...some licences have already been bought, but with 3G not really being ideal, i'd hold off on the 4G licenses.

i guarantee when we look back, sony is going to go wtf did we include a 3g model at launch.

The newer models will come with 3g option out the gate, but the 300 sku is going to bomb. Its common logic. Almost everyone that owns a phone. I see kids in kindergarden that have phones lol.
Could they just upgrade to 4G eventually?
would 4g even allowed gaming? I don't think any mobile connection allows gaming, Imagine you're gaming riding in a car playing online, and you go to a zone with no towers for like 5 mins than pop back in. Too many dropp and pick up connections lol
3G realy does sound like a gimmick ont his system since it cannto be used for gaming.
it doesn't sound like it. It IS a gimmick. That or a poorly constructed Idea.

3G is definitely fast enough for gaming. Heck, I've used a EVDO connection for over two years with 360 and PS3 gaming. However, it's not the best solution. It does have its problems, but it does work. Forget hosting games, and you'll undoubtedly be at the losing end of ping battles.

I don't see why they don't allow for gaming on PSV via 3G.
Thought it would be the 3g would be selling better than it is. I know, its not out yet, and I know amazon isn't the end all, but

As of Now,
PSV(Wifi): Amazon Bestsellers Rank: #89 in Video Games
PSV (3G/Wifi): Amazon Bestsellers Rank: #354 in Video Games

Huge disparity. Probably has to deal with pricepoint. With the imminent ps3 price drop, I feel that consumers aren't going to shell out huge cash for a $300 handheld when they got an i/pod/pad, and 3ds to compete with. Not to mention consoles. Plus the att thing. That's probably the number one reason, and we yet to see the potential of 3g and features that would want to make people tap in extra for a 3g. 80 percent of where I go has a wifi hotspot, most of the time free.
I know I'm late and I haven't read the entire thread, but I think a lot of it is due to the fact that Sony went exclusively with AT&T I know just because of that I won't even consider the 3g version. If they went with Verizon on the other hand... They'd have been best off not tying it to just one carrier.

I don't know much about this, and I'll probably recite this wrong, but I've heard/read that Verizon use their own, 'proprietary' technology for 3G whereas AT&T use 3G tech that's also used in most other countries.

I may get the 3G version, I'm just waiting to see if they'll do a PAYG version, I don't really want to get into a contract.

I think Verizon and Sprint perhaps use the same 3g tech. Anyway, would make sense globally, but I really think Sony hurt themselves by tying themselves strictly to ATT If you don't live in a MAJOR city ATT's signal/service stinks. (via my personal experience) It is faster however. Anyway to me being tied strictly to to ATT is a big turnoff.

Cause AT&T sucks.

Also 4G is pretty much here already. Way to drop the ball. Stuck in slow data rates now.

Regarding the Verizon thing, yeah Verizon and Sprint use CDMA tech, while T-Mobile and AT&T use GSM. So it isn't possible to transfer over the device.

It's only one website. Doesn't mean it isn't attracting customers. Probably just means that less people use Amazon. We will just have to see what happens.
