Assassin's Creed 4 will run at 1080p natively on PS4 after patch - via Polygon

The PlayStation 4 version of Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag will run at a native 1080p resolution, but will require a title update to do so, according to an update on the official Ubisoft blog.

Without the patch, Assassin's Creed 4 will render at 900p and be upscaled to 1080p resolution on PS4. Ubisoft communications manager Gary Steinman explains why there's a discrepancy between the game that shipped and the title update Ubisoft is rolling out after launch.

"[It was to] meet an essential goal: deliver a visually brilliant game at a steady 30 frames per second (the industry gold standard for open-world games)," Steinman said. "Finishing the game at 900p gave the development team the extra room in terms of the GPU and CPU usage to ensure the framerate never dips below 30 frames per second. The team then used the time between the ship date and the release to focus on a title update that could deliver native 1080p resolution on the PS4."

The title update will also bring with it "a brand-new anti-aliasing technique" to further improve the PS4 game's visuals, according to the post, a feature that will also apply to the Xbox One version shipping next week.

Developer Infinity Ward issued a similar update to the PS4 version of Call of Duty: Ghosts to bring the game's single-player campaign up to 1080p resolution. Publisher Activision said the resolution difference was due to a "configuration error" in the retail disc version.

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag is available for PS4 today. Read Polygon's review of that version and the previous console generation versions for our thoughts.
That's cool that they were still tinkering away to get it running even better so soon. I'll have to play this game eventually.

Thanks for the info.
I wonder if all the reviews and comparison videos were carried out at 900 then whereas now it's 1080. Similar thing with CoD Ghosts having the day 1 update to 1080p except their review copies were at 1080p.

Mine asked me about the patch immediately, so I took it.
The game is silly beautiful.
Looks like the PC demo i'd tried, and that's on an i7 970 with a Radeon 6950 and 24GB ram.

The bigger rig i have was packed up for moving already.

This game is great! It's like a slightly de-insanified FC3.

Looking forward to the patch. And the mind boggles at how good FC4 is going to look, as Ubi gets comfortable with the new platform.

I'm yet to even the wrap off this game, and I won't any time soon as long as I'm done with KZ. So plenty of time for me to wait for this update and try it out the way they intended it :)

Im loving AC4.
My one and not only problem is that Ubisoft didn't upgrade the AI, at all.
Is it to much to ask to give NPC's contextual animations based on the weather?
I cant stand it when it starts pouing hard, and everyone is doing the same thing they were doing when it was sunny.
When it starts to rain people should then try to find cover by running under a tree, grabbing something and putting over there heads as they move for cover. Something, other than nothing. It just really breaks the immersion for me. Still a great game though.

I'm kind of laughing at this comment. It's really strange to me that a complaint about a game is people not ducking for cover when it rains. Maybe I'm just reminded of the days as a kid playing Atari and Nintendo being perfectly happy with those graphics. What will we be complaining about in 20 years?

But think about how that would change the gameplay.

Imagine you're on a mission, tracking a target, and all of the sudden it rains.

They duck for cover and your mission is screwed up. I get what you're saying but it would change too much IMO

This applies to every part of AI behavior though. He is right. While graphics have advanced every generation, AI and partly animation and physics have been lagging behind.

He's perfectly right to complain. Question is who needs to listen.
