Australian R18+ Debate: Waiting on “silent majority”

The key ministerial roadblock to a R18+ rating for games in Australia – Senator Michael Atkinson – stood down from the front bench half a year ago. Yet Australian gamers of any age still cannot legally play games with content judged beyond a MA15+ rating.

Politicians now are citing the need for further consultation with the community before deciding whether to create a R18+ rating for games – something that would bring interactive entertainment in line with the existing rating scheme for film and TV content in the country.

GameSpot AU reports the Australian Federal Government opened up the issue to public consultation late last year, receiving 50,678 submissions – 98.2 % of which were in favour of a R18+ rating.

Despite the seemingly overwhelming support, Home Affairs Minister Brendan O’Connor is now saying quality of submissions is as important as quantity.
“Classification ministers agreed at that meeting that further work needs to be done before a decision can be made, including ascertaining the views of the silent majority,” said O’Connor.

“It is not just the weight of numbers that need to be considered. It is also the strength of arguments on each side.”

“Ascertaining the views of the silent majority” sounds like a pretty tricky proposition by definition. The argument is not likely to impress the vocal majority who made submissions supporting a R18+ rating – an unusual alliance that includes retailers, publishers and gaming communities in its ranks.
yeah this should be enough but no the politicians have to have it their way.....
I know right Y___Y

This has been going on for so long.

“It is not just the weight of numbers that need to be considered. It is also the strength of arguments on each side.”

Biggest load of BS.
Only fact on the opposing side is that games meant for 18 year olds are being sold to 15 year olds

until there's a R18+ over here I'll be importing all my games. And I have been since last year.Saves me money in the process and secures the fact the games I buy have no missing content.

I don't remember seeing any public consultation?

Maybe they should try post it out in the mail if they want real results.

How log has this been going on? Have you never been able to buy 18 only games like Kilzone or God of war? Could you buy 18 games form previous generations like GTA 123 etc?

they all got rated as MA15+
intended for a Mature Audience age 15 and up. So basically, MA is the highest rating we have, and so everything gets pushed into that category which means that 15 year olds can buy adult content

Yeh we work well like that dont we... Some things get phased down and some denied but normally at risk of denying big game they just put it as MA15+

I hear though that a lot of content needs to be from R18+ game to make it a MA15+ in terms of gore, violence and whatnot. I remember when I heard Fallout 3 lost a of it when released.

Fallout 3's change ended up being global, and aside from that and GTAIV where the enemies didn't "struggle" anymore on their knees, I dont remember any recent games getting cut. They usually just stick em all inot MA 15+
