This is great news, eventhough I doubt it will affect Mass Effect at all. Anything that cuts down development time, but still gives you amazing quality is great. I loved SpeedTree and how it was used in Oblivion, and I'm sure BioWare can put it to good use, whether it be in Dragon Age, or Mass Effect 2.
Yeah but the trees in Oblivion look like a$$ . I want detailed trees . Give me some textured greens damit !!
All of Oblivion looks like a$s compared to anything currently running on the U3 engine. It was due to time limitations not any limitations of the technology that the trees didn't look amazing.

well it makes sense, no one wants to spend the time and money putting trees all over a planet.

I wondered how SpeedTree managed to create such nice '3D' foliage without a massive performance hit, but when i was playing the Crackdown demo last week i discovered how it actually works. I went up close to a tree and walked around it, and it seems the leaves are just flat textures that move so they always face the 'camera', giving the illusion of 3D. I don't know if this was obvious, but i thought i'd just share that story.
