Does the PS4 allow simultaneous audio support through HDMI and Optical out?

I've been researching new headsets and it seems like the top end ones require you to plug in a mixer/receiver via the optical port. I'm pretty sure the PS3 Allowed you to have audio run via HDMI and the Optical at the same time so multiple devices could get audio. I thought I had read that the PS4 didn't allow this. can anyone verify? I'm away from my PS4 and won't get to check for a while. thanks.

I'm going to say, YES. With my tb xp500, I have sound through my tv via hdmi, and the headset via optical out to the receiver of the tb's.

Cool thanks man!

another question for you, does the sound always come through your speakers? Or when you turn on the headset does it kill the sound to the TV and speakers? That's the one nice thing I like about the Sony Pulse headset is that when you turn that on, it automatically kills the audio to the TV.
I'm guessing you could easily just hit mute on the TV/receiver but it'd be nice if the headset over-rode the speakers.

I can back that up. I get sound over HDMI through my TV and sound via my receiver via optical, so I turn down the TV.

As for headsets, right now it's wired only via the controller, but this is it how it works. Plug headphones into your controller and set your audio settings for your controller headphone jack to "all" -- that's chat and game audio, and interface sounds and probably movies and whatever. All audio goes through the controller to your headphones, not through the TV and/or receiver. Unplug the headphones. Sound is automatically routed to the TV and/or receiver. I leave mine set that way so if the kids want to play and I'm trying to read or something they can just plug in headphones, and unplugging them you get the full sound system back.

Ok, so I'm in the same boat here. I'm looking at the turtle beach elite 800 headset that comes out in October. I currently have the playstation 4 hooked up to a bose surround system reciever via HDMI, and from the reciever to the TV. The headset requires the optical out from the playstation, so my question is...I can output through the bose system, and through the optical cable/headset simultaneously? I think that's what you guys are saying, I'm just making sure before I spend $300 on a headset.

I think that's probably right but let someone confirm. I'm curious though as to why you would want sound through tv AND headphones? When i use my Turtle Beach XP500's i mute the tv and get it all through headphones.

I just want the option to listen to either without connecting or disconnecting anything. When using the headset, I would have the volume off on the surround system, but if I switch to a game like MLB The Show, I'd like to be able to put down the headset and just turn up the volume on the surround system, as opposed to disconnecting the headset and re-connecting the PS4 to the surround system. So I'd like both to be able to be hooked up, so I can choose one or the other.

you can have audio coming out of the hdmi and optical at the same time, but only one can be surround sound. you have to pick one from the audio options menu. it's not hard to do. so you wont have to disconnect or reconnect anything if you have hdmi going to a surround sound system and optical going to a headset mixer. you just have to pick which audio path gets surround sound via the ps4 system options depending on what you intend on using at the time. or you can buy one of the headsets sony offers for the playstation and it takes care of all this because it uses usb. which is what i do.

Good point on the Headset. I use the PS Gold Wireless Headset and leave the Audio as HDMI out. When I turn the power on the headset it switches the HDMI Audio output off and audio comes through the headset, same as if you plug in a headset to the the DS4.

Hi,
I know this case is kind of closed, but I have a new angle:
I am waiting for a pair of Elite 800's, and one of the reasons I chose it was the ability to use the optical out from the headset stand. That way, I am hoping, I won't need to go in to menus to change the surround sound from the headset to a surround reciever with optical in.
Does anyone know if this is true? (The Elite 800's haven't arrived in most European shops yet)
