Playing Fallout: New Vegas in hardcore mode could earn gamers more than just prestige with their peers.

Obsidian Entertainment's upcoming Fallout: New Vegas is known to have a hardcore mode that will be much tougher than the regular mode. Obsidian said that players would earn a major achievement/trophy for their trouble, but an early screenshot has indicated that a simple achievement might not be all that's awarded.

The screenshot supposedly shows the prompt screen in Fallout: New Vegas that pops up when gamers must decide whether they want the game to go hardcore or not (though the mode can be turned off later). The screen reads: "If you activate Hardcore mode now and maintain it through the end of the main storyline, you will receive a special reward."

The language used is vague, but seems to point to another reward outside from just an achievement or trophy, because many might not find an increase to their Gamerscore all that "special." Considering how much New Vegas's hardcore mode stacks the odds against players, an in-game reward like an amazing set of power armor or a new alien blaster would make sense.

The mode changes various major aspects of the game: ammunition has weight, players must regularly eat and drink, players need to sleep, stimpacks restore health over time and don't heal broken limbs, and Rad-away also cures radiation poisoning over time rather than instantly. It's a more realistic take on living in a nuclear apocalyptic wasteland. Exactly what reward is being referred to here, whether it be an achievement or something more, will have to wait until Fallout: New Vegas is released on October 19, or at least until someone gets a good look at the strategy guide.

Love the idea of Hardcore Mode and so I wonder what the reward is?

hmm, they didn't say enemies were stronger, or that I would lose health easier, so that's good..now I'm gonna try it..but IMO, games like these shouldn't have any level of hardness or easy, cause it's essentially a post-nuclear war simulator RPG..if you're gonna go all the way to heal certain parts of your body and heal poisoning or face different factions of enemies with stronger stamina, then just ditch the easy-hard settings all together..

I'm thinking they're trying to please both the casual and hardcore demographics with this setting. It also give a bit more realism considering it set in a nuclear wasteland.

I found Hard on Fallout 3 a breeze so this makes me more tempted to buy it.

Love the idea of it having more 'realism'. When I finally get this game, I'll definitely try the Hardcore Mode.

That sounds really fun. Radiation might actually be a problem in hard core mode. In fallout 3 even on very hard, I never got radiation poisoning (That I didn't intentionally get for the Survival Guide).
Load up on stim packs and no need to drink dirty water. But now stims arent as useful, and you need to eat and drink. No pure water around? Drink the glowing stuff or die!

This is going to be awesome!

I'm playing Hardcore mode from the start. It sounds like you actually have to keep an eye on health, food, and war. FO3 was an utter joke even on Very Hard. Hardcore mode is separate from difficulty, so can do Very Easy and Hardcore mode if it's to hard.

Yeah, Difficulty just effects the damage enemies do to you, HP they have, and what not.

Hardcore Mode gives ammo weight, stimpaks don't heal instantly, broken limps can only be healed with a doctors bag or by a doctor, you have to sleep or you be sluggish in combat, need to carry food and water, and fast travel for too long can get you kill because of the water and food meter. Hardcore mode was designed for people who want an extra challenge and targeted at fans of the first two Fallouts.

For general info, take a peek a here:

As for Hardcore mode, if you play smart and keep supplies on you and weapons to deal with different threats you should be a-ok. However I'd imagine one of the higher level Death Claws could be a dangerous enemy.

Well, in the normal Fallout game: bullets don't have weight; sleeping, drinking, and eating are only used for healing purposes; certain essential characters are invulnerable; etc. Hardcore mode makes bullets have weight, and makes sleeping, drinking, and eating essential for survival, as well as eliminating the invulnerability of key characters. Basically, it makes the game more realistic.

im really looking forward to hardcore mode. i hope the melee and/or unarmed combat is good in this game, would be a good way to conserve some ammo/storage space. can't wait to knock out some fools with the boxing gloves too haha.

Or possibly a beta code for the Fallout MMO?

Kinda sounds like a lot of you guy didn't even know that the new Fallout had a hardcore mode. I heard about it months ago.

is it just me.. or is that a little silly?

The game will be boring if it's too real.. I can't be assed to have to sleep and eat and do all of that stuff inside the game as well as IRL while I'm playing it :p we play games to escape reality. It's kinda like the sims, I never understood that game.

I'm looking forward to trying it. Though I really hope it's more of a "Hard core" mode and less of a "Tedious" mode. It's kinda reminds me back in the days of playing "The Sims", you tried to get things done, but between the sleeping, bathroom breaks, eating, and stopping your neighbor from burning down your house you couldn't just have fun.

Ah, the way I see it is that realism adds challenge and a challenge in a game is never boring...unless the game itself is ****.
