FAQ and advise needed regarding PS3 data transfer

Greetings PSN warriors

I recently purchased a 320GB slim PS3 system and would like to transfer the data, profile, etc saved on my 80GB into this new 320GB system.

I have a few questions before I execute the transfer operation and it is vital that I receive feedback as the underlining issues are agitating and confusing me.

1. From what I have read on the net, according to most users. if you copy or transfer your old data onto your new PS3 and continue playing that game you cannot obtain trophies from where you left, is this true?

For example, I have 14% on Virtua Tennis 2009 so if I copy the save data file onto my new PS3 and carry on from where I left will I still be able to obtain trophies from that position? Or do I actually have to start all over again?

2. If the answer to question 1 is 'Yes', is there actually any other way for me to transfer previous data onto my new system and carry on obtaining trophies from where I left?

3. Which data transfer manner is most appropriate for my situation?

(a) - Via Ethernet cable (data utility transfer)
(b) Back up, restore/ system settings using external hard drive or USB to copy

If it's (b), then what kind of external hard drive do I need to purchase? I would appreciate any links directing me to a product in the ranges of £15 - £40. (I read that I need an external hard drive that is compatible to FAT32 for the PS3).

4. Could PlayStation+ cloud or online storage solve this problem? Is it possible to save data from your current PS3 to your online storage and transfer or use that data for your new PS3 system? If that's the case is cloud/online storage linked with your PSN account, so the only way I can use that data is to sign in to my old or current profile which I am planning to do by not 'creating an account' on my new PS3 but by clicking on 'existing user...'

5. Any other tips and advices would make me happy

It will demoralize me if I have to start Assassins Creed brotherhood again to Platinum something I have already achieved 93% in!

Kind Regards

The best way to transfer your data is definitely the Transfer utility. Use an ethernet cable and just follow the instructions to the letter. Everything, including any locked saves (Like Rock Band songs etc), will transfer perfectly. Also, your trophies are synced to their server not on your machine, I believe, hence the Trophy "Synching". Their servers are what's being synched with. Right now while the net is down, we can still earn trophies as they are being stored on our machine. Once service is restored, the trophies become synched to their (SONY's) servers and are saved there. I would wait to do this until the network is restored and you can change your passwords though just to safe. I did use the transfer for my original PS3 (A 20gig with a 60 gig HDD) to my new 120 gig slim and it took about 1 hour and 45 minutes, but afterwards, everything was exactly the same as before, I lost nothing (and I had a lot of stuff on there!). But, be sure to follow the instructions exactly with regards to the enabling/disabling of game content and video etc. And also use the recommended cable they talk about and you'll be fine, even if your machine had a dead laser lens like mine did!
Good luck, message me if you need more help!

Thanks for your reply

So if the process of transfer Utility with an ethernet cable is successful will I be able to continue from where I left? I am aware that trophies are synced to Sony's servers but I want to make sure that I can continue obtaining trophies EVEN ON ANOTHER SYSTEM USING THE PREVIOUS SAVE DATA FILE

In addition, is it true that when you transfer data from your old PS3 to your new one via the the eternet cable (transfer utility) you lose all your data from the system you transfered from??

In that case I am scared and I'm questioning my own confidence as I don't want to delete everything on my old PS3 to find out that I can't for some random reason transfer data to the new one!

Another question, if

Another question, if for example I fail transfering data and I lose everything can they take my trophies away from me???

Basically if I have 93% of Trophies on Assassins Creed brotherhood on my old ps3, can I continue from where I left on the new PS3 and obtain the remaning 7% from the actual save data file I transfered from my old system?

Why are some people on the net stating that you cannot continue to obtain trophies from your 'old save data file' because when you transfer data via save data ethernet cable utility or external hard drive, the save data files are 'copied' to another system so somehow it won't read when you gain trophies...is this true?

Kind Regards

Thanks for your reply

Srry guys but I need all the advise before I do anything

Is cloud online storage useful for saved data to transfer to another ps3 system

In other words can I save my ps3 data at online stroage on my 80GB ps3 system and then transfer and use that saved date by logging into my PSN account on another 320GB ps3 system?

what happens after the month PS+ subsrice elapses and you have no priveles of cloud storage do you lose all your data???

To answer one of your questions I will use an example.
My fat console Died. Thankfully I had backups of my saves on external HDD. I bought a new one, logged on to it and copied saves from the external HDD. Started Burnout, continued from where I left off, and got singleplayer trophies when I was supposed to get them.

You need to have your profile activated on the console which happens when you log on, after that most games should keep your progress.

So far only Pacific Rift is reporting that the save is corrupted, won't even download the update, and shuts down my console. Perhaps once the PSN is back up, it should work. (I haven't tried installing it when PSN was working, I guess I should have)

Everything - including game saves, profiles, music, photos, videos, etc.. - transfers over fine. You'll keep the trophies you already had, and you'll be able to continue from where you left off.

The data stays on your old system, but it formats the new system before everything's transfered. So, in essence, you'll have two sets of everything - one on each system.

Hope this heps :)

Yes, I agree with #7. When I did my transfer, everything went over just fine. Cloud storage is just another way to save game files you don't want to put on your system because of space. Once saved it can always be retrieved after the transfer is done. But, I would wait until they fix the network before doing this because I'm not positive about not having the network up for proper synching etc.
