Qualifying results:

1 Sebastian Vettel Red Bull
2 Fernando Alonso Renault
3 Mark Webber Red Bull
4 Rubens Barrichello Brawn
5 Jenson Button Brawn
6 Jarno Trulli Toyota
7 Nico Rosberg Williams
8 Kimi Räikkönen Ferrari
9 Lewis Hamilton McLaren
10 Sebastien Buemi Toro Rosso
11 Nick Heidfeld BMW
12 Heikki Kovalainen McLaren
13 Felipe Massa Ferrari
14 Kazuki Nakajima Williams
15 Sebastien Bourdais Toro Rosso
16 Nelson Piquet Renault
17 Robert Kubica BMW
18 Adrian Sutil Force India
19 Timo Glock Toyota

It should make for a good race, for the first time the Brawns are not leading the pack although they should have enough pace to put up a good fight. The Mclarens and Ferraris are closely matched aswell.

Glock suffered from gearbox failure and therefore received a five place grid penalty.

Timo Glock suffered a five-place grid penalty, having suffered a gearbox failure during the third and final free practice session in Shanghai.

The German managed just six laps before falling foul of an upshift problem on the start-finish straight and having to crawl back to the Toyota garage.
His mechanics immediately swarmed over the TF109 to get the car ready for qualifying but he struggled for grip in Q2 and qualified in 14th place, although he will drop to 19th after his penalty.

Glock said: "This morning I had a gearbox problem after three or four laps in free practice so we lost a complete session. So I was short of track time heading into qualifying. The car felt different from yesterday and it was already really tricky to drive."
Speculation on the BBC website suggests that Alonso is fuelled very light for the first stint. That could make for an interesting start.

Pre-race weights & provisional grid

For the 2009 season, the FIA are making public the weights of all cars ahead of the race start to help give an idea of relative fuel loads. The cars that made Q3 are weighed after qualifying, while the weights of the remaining cars must be declared by their teams shortly after the session.

Below is the provisional grid for China with each car's weight. Note - Toyota’s Timo Glock has dropped from 14th to 19th after his gearbox change.

1. Sebastian Vettel, Red Bull, 644kg
2. Fernando Alonso, Renault, 637
3. Mark Webber, Red Bull, 646.5
4. Rubens Barrichello, Brawn GP, 661
5. Jenson Button, Brawn GP, 659
6. Jarno Trulli, Toyota, 664.5
7. Nico Rosberg, Williams, 650.5
8. Kimi Raikkonen, Ferrari, 673.5
9. Lewis Hamilton, McLaren, 679
10. Sebastien Buemi, Toro Rosso, 673
11. Nick Heidfeld, BMW Sauber, 679
12. Heikki Kovalainen, McLaren, 697
13. Felipe Massa, Ferrari, 690
14. Kazuki Nakajima, Williams, 682.7
15. Sebastien Bourdais, Toro Rosso, 690
16. Nelson Piquet, Renault, 697.9
17. Robert Kubica, BMW Sauber, 659
18. Adrian Sutil, Force India, 648
19. Timo Glock, Toyota, 652
20. Giancarlo Fisichella, Force India, 679.5
Like you said, Alonso is running very light. He's the lightest out of anyone.
Piquet is the heaviest, with nearly 700kgs.
Massa is also fueled pretty heavy as well as Hamilton.

It's gonna be a very close and interesting race tomorrow. :D

Bummed I missed the Quali, would have been pretty exciting by the looks of things.

Awesome for Vettel and Webber :D And nice to see a Renault up the top - even if Alonso is running light.

Looking forward to the race 8)

I'm sure you can catch the highlights somewhere. :p

Vettel did an amazing job. He only did 1 lap in Q2 and Q3.
The Renault car looked like it was performing well with the new diffuser fitted on. I heard that the Renualt mechanics worked until like 5:00am local time. So I'm glad that Alonso is towards the front of the grid.

considering that alonso is pretty much on fumes and the brawns are tanked up, the qualifying gap between them is very VERY small.

alonso needs to get as much of a gap as possible built up in the 8 laps most people are speculating he has to work with.

I just don't think he'll do it, and possibly after the first set of stops (definitely the second), both brawn cars will be long gone.

I completetly agree.

He'll be in front by the end of the first few laps, but he won't build up enough of a lead to secure the position for when he pits.

Happy Hammy is tanked up, means hes got a better car than the previous race. Alonso running skinny is a funny too, especially after Fabio's outburst at Buttons driving ability and their defusers.

looks like Toyota want Glock to come through the pack pretty quick too. a lot of heavier cars in front though. hopefully he and Kubica can get through alright.

It'd have to be on the straight, I think Glock will get held up and his race ruined, I still don't think the new aero-dynamics have made a big difference, if at all.

i think Glock will do ok as long as Kubica can get through the pack as well. getting around him will be the hardest part.

and dont forget Glock had a lightning start at the last race.

Pretty sure there was a more recent thread than this, but whatever.
ITs that time of year when testing starts so here is a vid.
The ferrari name is unfortunate anagram of F-SH17
