Gran Turismo Sport is heading to PlayStation 4 as the next official chapter in the long-running racing simulator franchise, series creator Kazunori Yamauchi has announced.

Speaking during Sony's Paris Games Week press conference this evening, Yamauchi-san took to the stage to unveil the hotly anticipated project, which aims to change the way in which we play driving games. GT Sport will have two championships running simultaneously throught the year; one sees you representing your country in the nation's cup, while the other has you supporting your chosen car manufacturer.

In addition, Yamauchi-san also confirmed a partnership with FIA for Gran Turismo Sport, with the planned beta due to kick off in early 2016. The game will also support Sony's upcoming PlayStation VR headset. No release was given for the final game, although given Gran Turismo's traditionally lengthy development cycle, we don't expect to hear anything this side of Christmas.

Stay tuned to PSU for more details.

For people who haven't seen it/want to watch it again:

I'm intrigued by a new Gran Turismo that will not be a numbered title. No telling when we will get this though. But the beta will be early next year so maybe in 2016.

This actually going be a racing game now? all the past games where just showing its beauty pick a car & race init!! an all the time you have to come 1st 1st 1st what was the point!! not everyone can be best at coming 1st to win. best option for GTsport is points system & move to different racing categories earning some kind of XP to unlock new modes an move in to a different racing sections

I think that's why they wentaway from the numbered versions. I think they are going to try something new with the series. Maybe do a semi arcade type. Who knows.

This is kind off like that GT Academy thing we got back in the day. I'm excited about this for reasons I will expand upon on a different occasion.

I thought the whole point of racing was to come in 1st? Vin Diesel said if you're not in first, you are last. And it doesn't matter if you win by an inch or a mile, winning is winning. So your post confuses me. If you can't be the best at coming in first, then you need to try harder. Practice! Learn your craft. Games are dumb enough as-is holding your hand in everything now a day. Not everything should be about getting a gold star because you participated.

Ricky Bobby's dad did say "if your not first, your last" and Vin Diesel said "It doesn't matter if you win by an inch or a mile, winnings winning"

But yes, really looking forward to this GT, especially them going to the effort to hire a new sound specialist for the engine noises!

Never said it was that serious. Just based off my personality in PSU, you should know I don't lose no sleep off nothing. Especially no damn video game. I was just sayin' that's all. Just thought I should throw out there you don't need to get a participation trophy that's all. lol

Turns out that this is NOT Gran Turismo 7, but will be more then just a prologue:

Following hot on the heels of everything we currently know about the upcoming Gran Turismo Sport, there is another fact that can be added to that list, one that answers a question many of you have been asking since yesterday’s announcement: Gran Turismo Sport is not Gran Turismo 7.

Sony Computer Entertainment Europe’s president and CEO Jim Ryan confirmed this when speaking with Eurogamer, saying GT7 wasn’t being announced at this stage. However, there’s insistence that GT Sport will be more substantial than the more traditional ‘Prologue’ titles in the franchise that have prefaced the full-featured releases.

“Fair to say [series director Kazunori Yamauchi] has been making these games for some considerable time now. I think it’s reasonable to assume that something else might come down the road. Is it a Prologue? No, I think it’ll be more than that.

The old days, when the games were offline, the experience was defined by what’s on the disc. You had a distinction between a Prologue and a full GT, it was very stark. When the game becomes more of an online connected experience, that distinction blurs. This will be much more than a Prologue type experience.”

There are still many questions surrounding the new title and with the confirmation that GT Sport is not the seventh entry in the franchise, but a standalone effort, one of the more frequent questions can be laid to rest.

Well I was thinking the same but the fact that he mentioned it was more than just a prologue it gave me a little bit of hope, like you say I shall still buy it though because I can imagine the graphics will be AMAZING :D

Well hopefully with a spring release for the beta we won't have to wait too long!

I'm very disappointed. And this means GT7 is probably being delayed just so they can get this prologue up and running on the VR. Nothing against those clamoring for the VR, but I don't think focusing that much attention on it, to the detriment of one of their biggest franchises, is a particularly good move on Sony's part...

i wasnt talking about illegal road racing plus all that was purely drag racing in a straight line so obviously you have to come 1st to win :/ but on track is whole different ball game to that nonsense.

im talking about how these GT games always have to come first to complete modes in everyone! but in another words motorsport relys on points systems through out how many tracks you've been racing on, come first more points you gain if second or third you can have better chances in the next rounds of racing of trying to come 1st therefore you don't have to come 1st all the time have to race work your way up & down the standings.

look at Driveclub let's you race in modes that gives you bar says weather you need to come first or finish in top 3 to complete the mode.

Yeah, I feared this was just gonna be a little exploration away from the main series. Personally I'm still worried this is just going to be half the game we expected it to be and can only share others disappointment at them not working on a fully fledged title. Perhaps I'm being too harsh on them, but without a date or even something basic in game to watch I think its going to be an absolute age before I can get even remotely excited about this...

But please prove me wrong Polyphony...

It's a nice appetizer for GT7. No doubt with a limited amount of cars, but at least they're all premium. I hope it's not a dozen versions of the same car tho.

Looking back on GT5 and GT6, I don't think we'll ever see two main GT titles in a single console cycle ever again :/

Maybe not. Games are taking longer to develop these days, after all.
That and practically no one bought GT6.
Still amazed they went ahead and released the game right under the nose of a new console. They really needed to get that game out much much earlier than December... GTA5 released in September, multiplatform and with everyone still debating about it coming out on the new consoles and obviously didn't sell half bad. I still vividly remember wondering why I bought GT6 knowing I had a week with it before I'd be setting up my PS4 and not necessarily feel I needed to go back to my PS3 for a while.

Thinking back on it now absolutely nothing about their decision making made much sense. Given how long people expect their development cycle to be you'd have thought they'd be forgiven for delaying it a while and making it work on a new console. I know it was probably just the fallout of the PS3 architecture, and the obvious thing to do was to prevent it coming out so late, but either way a massive game like that still needed room to breathe and it literally didn't get any.

Now that you mention it, I'm even more interested in watching how Last Guardian turns out given what they decided to do at Team Ico (albeit for apparently different reasons) - maybe it'll show Poly were damned if they did and damned if they didn't whatever they did.

They might have been better off announcing a port of GT6 to be released early in the year and then just carry on with GT7 but I'm still intrigued to see how it looks now they are solely concentrating on producing it just on PS4, hopefully means it won't suffer like they sometimes do when they are multiplat!
