Is jumping in shooting games important to you?

Now that Guerrilla is adding a jump function in Killzone 2 because of gamers wanting it in the first Killzone, I'd like to know what others opinion about being able to jump in shooters are.

If you wouldn't be able to jump in a game would you care about it? There are a lot of shooters out where you can't jump, like Timesplitters and Gears Of War but lately it seems like devs finds it an important feature to have in their game.

But is it? Does it really make the game any better or is it just a pointless feature that's there to make you feel like you have more freedom? Some people like it because of the realism it adds, but would it still matter if it's a sci-fi shooter.

for some reason if a game doesnt have jump i will still try to jump. LOL so i guess i do need it. i would say no it does not make the game better. but if you can jump in real life and games are trying to mimick real life then it should be in there.

If they have a spare button that isn't doing anything then why not? But it doesn't really matter, and if they have a better use for the buttons then forget it.

The only thing I hated about Killzone 1 was how linear it felt. It wasn't the fact that I couldn't jump, it was that I couldn't get past the smallest obstacles. I remember being bottle-necked at a number of different points by 3 foot fences, and it was just annoying.

A game doesn't need a jump button, but it at least needs an "action" button to clear obstacles. I know Killzone 1 had it, but they used it like 3 times, and you were obviously on a straight path to your next objective. I understand that Killzone 2 will likely be linear as well, but it doesn't have to feel that way.

Basically, I don't need a jump button, but the character on-screen needs to get past obstacles in some way. If a button like that isn't neccessary then I don't see how it could be a very good game anyway. Running around on a flat surface isn't my idea of "next-gen."

Honestly I think its quite annoying I hated it in Halo every now and then I see it in COD4 I just aim up a little bit and take them out. really won't do much good also makes you look like a idiot in the process.

I think jumping is very useful when going over objects or jumping out of windows. What I really get a kick out of is people who play COD4 and try to "bunny hop" like they are playing Halo and then get destroyed.

Well if a game has no jump button, and the levels don't really have any places that jumping would be useful then, it doesn't matter. But if a game has no jump button and there are tons of places jumping would be useful, than that annoys me. I just think you might as well have a jump button.

How would people in multi-player Halo ever play the game if there was no jump?

Gears didn't have jump and people adapted.

I see people use it all the time in and Halo multiplayer, and it's annoying. But I like to be able to jump to be more realistic. I mean a person should be able to jump over a two foot obstacle.

Killzone was a shooter, not Oblivion. It's about shooting your way to a spacific location, not exploration. You have an objective to complete, so you push forward.

I do understand about freedom in games because some do it well, but I don't think that every game needs that level of freedom, and I don't think that linear games are a bad thing.

I agree that jumping is pointless in 3D shooters. I would even be as bold as to say that probably nobody has ever jumped straight up in the air, for no reason, in a real combat situation, in the history of the world. Jumping in combat simply is not realistic or practical. But hey, I guess a game is a game.

Unless i can jump like the scout from team fortress 2 there really is not point. Not sure im in love with context jumps because they leave you kind of vulnerable for a second but thats int he name of reality i suppose.

No, not at all. I rarely use the jump button in shooting games, except for in Warhawk, unless it is actually needed for gameplay (like Uncharted). Seems like a bit of an obsolete button.

jumping has saved my sorry behind more times than I count

it's not always about strafing you can only dodge so many rounds after a while

but jumping always gets you a edge if you're clever

This may be part of the reason why halo is the most played game online and gears is just a after thought...

Jumping works when a game is designed with jumping in mind. Team Fortress 2 is a good example how jumping can be fun and important to win a match.

Its really a matter of game design.

I never really run into guys like that. If I do, I still can own them the same as anyone else. It almost makes it easier to kill them because you just aim upwards.

As much as i love having the ability to jump, it isnt always neccessary, i could live with points in a game / map where it gives you a message such as "Press X to jump" or "press X to climb" but jumping out of the way of gun fire etc is pretty useful

It really dpeends on the other mechanics in the game. If there's no dodge mechanics and no jump button then it just feels worthless to play the game.
