Lionsgate has officially announced a movie adaptation of the multi-million selling action-RPG video game franchise, Borderlands.

The film will be produced by Avi and Ari Arad, who are perhaps best known for their work on the likes of Spider-Man, Iron Man and X-Men. At this early stage, there is currently no word on when we can expect the movie to hit cinemas.

We believe that we’ve brought together the right partners, the ideal creative team and the perfect property to launch a new motion picture tent-pole for a global audience,” commented Rob Friedman and Patrick Wachsberger of Lionsgate Motion Picture Group.

Part of our strategy in entering the game space under [president of interactive ventures and games] Peter Levin has been to source new brands with built-in audiences that will translate into great films and television shows. The Borderlands games don’t pull any punches, and we’ll make the movie with the same in-your-face attitude that has made the series a blockbuster mega-franchise.”

Borderlands
was launched in 2009 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, and received a sequel in 2012. Last year saw the release of Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel, while 2015 witnessed a high-definition re-release of The Pre-Sequel and Telltale Games' Tales from the Borderlands episodic series.

A third instalment in the popular series is currently in development at Gearbox Software for PS4 and Xbox One.

This will be interesting to see how it pans out. Unfortunately I have almost zero hope for video game adaptations. But this would be one of the coolest ones to do.

At its core Borderlands is heavily inspired by Mad Max but there is a lot of supernatural stuff that can really separate itself. Will it happen, likely not. But the potential is there.
