in all likelihood it was bought just to park a redirect on... doubt it gets used for anything "official"...

plus, it prevents fanboy morons from dumping a site on that name.

Keep up with the news much? Called out Xbone as "disrespectful". Main PR guy speaks out against the nickname then MS does the 180 dance and secures the domain name not long after.

180 dance or a move to prevent internet goobers from securing it and using it for mock sites?

That's probably because the view of MS is not the same as that guy who said it was disrespectful, like I said it isn't disrespectful at all, just a quicker way to call it and nice on them to buy it so that it may redirect to their page.
lol, "XBONE" is official in a someway now isn't it?
Technically only if they do something with the website beyond making it a redirector. They could simply be securing the domain name, and use it for re-directing to prevent someone else from grabbing it and using it, hoping to capitalize on it being typed in by those who don't actually know the URL name to go to.

This is actually done a lot these days.

It's still fun to poke fun at Major Nelson over this though

EDIT: I just tried to go to xbone.com and my company has it blocked as a porn site, LOL. Ok, this actually makes even more sense.

Given that XBOX One is being abbreviated as XBone - attempting to go a website of that name would take people to a porn site, so MS procuring this will allow them to shut that down.
They couldn't make it to 720 so they settled with one, now it looks like they have reached 180! Which is good I suppose
ONE x 720 / PS4 = 180.

they own the domain, but like I said in at least two posts... it is likely just to prevent someone else using it. As well, someone else, Itachi I believe, said XBone hit Adult Filters on web blockers. MS prob is avoiding that as well.

I get it, don't worry, I know most here see this as some sort of admission of the name being bad, or something to hold against MS... then there are people like me that see from a business standpoint, this makes sense to keep out of the hands of others. Park a redirect on there and point it to the xbox.com site. Happens all over the place. Ever typed in GOGGLE.com? It redirects you to enter a contest. Someone knew that is a popular misspelling and bought it up so they can use it for redirects.

It was only a matter of time. I said before that Xbone would redirect to Xbox One when you typed it into Wikipedia and it was a commonly used abbreviation on social networking sites like Twitter.

Blame MS for making the "Xbone" popular.

Its like Apple calling their recent iPad "The New iPad", which is downright confusing. The term "Xbox One" confuses everyone that ever played with the original Xbox (which I happen to own).

Not that it helped that MS pretty much "boned" the consumer when the mandatory online DRM was revealed before the 180s, which made it worst.

I guess first impression is always important.
